ROME (Reuters) - AC Milan have held talks with Lazio over Italy defender Alessandro Nesta just a day after the Rome-based club announced he would not be leaving.
"Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti met a club official this morning in Sardinia and Milan confirmed its interest in Nesta," a statement on AC Milan's website said.
Milan added that they were "more than willing to close the deal" although the two clubs were still far apart in their valuation of the player.
Nesta, the highly-rated centre back who was plagued by a foot injury at the World Cup, started his career at Lazio.
Lazio were not immediately available to comment, but on Thursday the Italian news agency ANSA quoted Cragnotti saying: "We have no intention of getting rid of him."
Like other Serie A teams, Lazio have fallen victim to the financial crisis engulfing football and there has been transfer speculation about several of their players, including Nesta and Argentine internationals Hernan Crespo and Claudio Lopez.
