Nesta to Inter a formality, claims Cragnotti

Monday 8th July 2002

Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti claims that Alessandro Nesta's £18 million move to Internazionale will be completed by the weekend - providing Cristiano Zanetti is included in the deal.

"Nesta will probably be an Inter player before Friday," the supremo revealed.

Cragnotti claimed that the Rome club would do business as long as Zanetti - rather than forward Nicola Ventola or Turkey midfielder Emre Belozoglu - was the makeweight in the summer's longest running transfer saga.

"Zanetti is the only Inter player we are interested in," Cragnotti declared. "I want to give to coach Roberto Mancini all the players he needs before the end of the week."

Cragnotti and Inter counterpart Massimo Moratti will meet for the second consecutive day on Tuesday to thrash out terms.

Inter first offered Lazio Ventola, then Emre, in part exchange for the Italy defender but neither player satisfied Mancini's requirements.

Inter coach Hector Cuper recently said that Zanetti was not for sale, but his stance has changed following the purchase of defensive midfielder Mathias Almeyda from Parma.

Earlier on Monday Cragnotti had paved the way for the move. "Nesta is half-way between Lazio and Inter," he said. "He is 50 per cent an Inter player."

Only £18million why didn't we try for him <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I'm glad that Cragnotti felt it necessary to explain that half-way was equatable to 50 per cent.

£18m? Bloody hell!

If Leeds *don't* sell Rio for £30m, their board deserves to be sacked!

If United offer £30m for Rio, heck our board might be sacked!

It's all about the Plcs these days.

The club boards must be *much* more worried about collapsing revenues than we thought.

18m cash plus ventola (bought for 10m) and either zanetti/emre (worth around 8m each)

It's Javier I think, Christiano went back to Roma.

if the deal goes thru cristiano zanetti will move to lazio. roma wanted to buy him earlier but he was untrensfable. well that changed when almeyda signed for inter.
just can't understand one think. inter play with for at the back. right side reserved for J. znetti left for coco. and for the middle positons there are cordoba, gamarra, materazi, sorondo, padalino and now probably nesta.
who of them will play? i would go for nesta and cordoba but can't see materazi and gamarra seating on the beanch. i quess someone will have to leave

No worry Nesta will be at OTY. Anyway. so the prob would not arise. :p

And if it did :(
Gamarra would partners Nesta without a doubt. ;)

No, he was co-owned by Inter and Roma for a few years but he returned to Inter last summer.

LAZIO PULL PLUG ON NESTA DEAL

Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti has called time on the protracted saga of Alessandro Nesta's proposed transfer to Inter Milan.

Cragnotti has finally lost patience and pulled the plug on the move which would have taken the £25million-rated defender to the San Siro.

The Lazio supremo met with his Inter counterpart Massimo Moratti yesterday afternoon, but they left without reaching an agreement.

The stumbling block concerned Inter midfielder Cristiano Zanetti, with Lazio wanting him to form part of the deal, possibly just on a temporary basis.

Cragnotti said: "The chapter regarding Inter and Nesta is closed, there is no agreement. I am 99% sure that our captain will remain at Lazio. We want Cristiano Zanetti but they don't want to loan him out.''

Juventus now seem favourites to land the 26-year-old centre-back, who is rated as one of the best defenders in the world.

However the deal again hinges on Lazio persuading Nesta's possible future employers to part with one of their midfielders, this time Dutch international Edgar Davids.

"Juventus are also in the race, but they also know what we want,'' said Cragnotti. "Davids knows that we want him, so if he wants to come we will have him.''

Looking to clear mounting debts, Lazio need the money if they are to fund any new signings of their own as they look to improve on last season when they finished a disappointing 18 points behind champions Juventus in sixth place.

The latest development will also alert Manchester United, with Sir Alex Ferguson a keen admirer of the Italian international.

However, they will need to persuade the Lazio captain to change his mind after revealing two days ago it would be Inter or no-one.

"I am not interested in a move to Juventus or a foreign team. Either I go to Inter or I will stay at Lazio,'' he said.

Moratti was resigned to missing out on Nesta after failing to agree on a player plus cash deal.

He said: "What Cragnotti thinks counts a lot. Last night Nesta was 50% between the two clubs. However, it could be that Nesta is now 99% at Lazio.

"The chance of paying the total for Nesta in cash? No, I don't think so.''

An opening Maybe Hmmmmm
