Fergie rebuilds Utd once more By NEIL CUSTIS

AS Alex Ferguson picked up three new pieces, another jigsaw began to take form.

Keeper David de Gea, centre-back Phil Jones and now England winger Ashley Young have joined Manchester United as Ferguson (below) once more reinvigorates his team.

And his £55million spending spree may not be over yet.

Another team is forming just as the title winners of 1993 evolved into the Treble winners of 1999, who were overhauled to create the Champions League kings of 2008.

Time never stands still for Ferguson and sentiment does not get in the way - just ask David Beckham and Roy Keane.

As ever when rebuilding, Ferguson looks a lot deeper than the names that find themselves on to all the top clubs' radars.

For him, other pieces in the new jigsaw have been on the shelves at Carrington for some time just waiting to be placed into the big picture.

The Fergie line-up of the future as shown on this page may not rattle any cages right now. But the master builder knows it will, as it emerges over the next few years.

After all he was famously told he would 'never win anything with kids' when he produced his most renowned overhauling at Old Trafford in 1995.

The FA Youth Cup winners of 1992 became the foundations for success from the mid-90s and beyond.

Look at the three great Ferguson teams on this page from the past and any manager would have been proud to have any one of them on his CV. Fergie never allows a side to grow old and stale as Chelsea have.

Nor will he baulk at the big buy when the money is there, unlike Arsene Wenger.

But it does not always need the big bucks he spent on the likes of Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Dimitar Berbatov either.

Remember Eric Cantona cost £1.2m and a 'Little Pea' turned into a little gem when Javier Hernandez became the bargain of the season at £6m.

Ferguson's teams are a product not only of his eye for the right man at the right time but in getting the raw talent and moulding it into a star.

He took a one-trick pony in Cristiano Ronaldo and turned him into a thoroughbred.

This team for the future has been a combination of scouting and nurture.

There is no genius in landing Young, Wayne Rooney or maybe even Antonio Valencia.

And the latest big-money buy who could be on his way to Old Trafford is Arsenal playmaker Samir Nasri.
But look through the rest of the team and each has been carefully brought through the ranks or had their development tracked elsewhere.

At 20, Atletico Madrid's De Gea may seem expensive at £18.3m when most goalkeepers do not peak until they are 26.

However, Ferguson trusts his instincts - and those of the men around him.

The incredible Da Silva twins Fabio and Rafael have already relieved the headache of right-back Gary Neville's retirement and who will replace left-back Patrice Evra when the brilliant Frenchman moves on.

Jones may have come to everyone's attention this past season at Blackburn yet fellow centre-back Chris Smalling, 21, seemed an expensive gamble at £8m with such relatively little experience at Fulham.

Last season, though, he took to the Old Trafford stage and the spotlight of the Champions League without problems.

The midfield in this team has the established Valencia and Young on either flank with Nani's future not entirely certain after a poor second half to the season.

The centre looks far from familiar but Tom Cleverley has been with United since he was 15.

After successful loan spells at Watford, where he was their 2009-10 player of the season, and Wigan, Ferguson has called him back and believes he is ready.

Those who have witnessed 18-year-old attacking midfielder Ravel Morrison at close quarters know United have a genius.

He has had problems off the pitch though on it, he has everything needed to be a great.

Have a look on YouTube at his two goals in the second leg of United's FA Youth Cup triumph this season.

Also for those who believe there is still 'only one Keano' watch 18-year-old Will Keane on the same video.

He is an out-and-out striker and a previous recipient of the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year trophy.

His twin brother Michael is a very handy right-back in the same United youth team.

New names, new stars in the making, a new United, as the conveyor belt of talent continues to bring in the trophies.

Ferguson will be 70 this New Year's Eve but shows no signs of stopping and no signs of losing his touch in his constant rebuilding at United.

Even if he does call it a day he will make sure his successor has the tools at his disposal with which to continue the good work.

As Ferguson insisted: "We've got a good nucleus of young players in the club which gives you the foundation to be able to protect the future and know it's going to be all right."

Ohhhhhh I can't wait for the new season

I hope he's right about Morrison etc and let's hope Pogba turns out to be a beast too.

God, I hate the Sun.

I hate it's shitty journalism, I hate the way they can't write in paragraphs of more than one short sentence, and I hate Custis' articles.

It's not a bad article considering who wrote it.

The midfield in this team has the established Valencia and Young on either flank with Nani's future not entirely certain after a poor second half to the season.

Don't agree with that though.

Well the guy is well connected as far as Utd goes

Really? Because The Sun runs an incredible number of absolute fantasy stories when it comes to transfers etc., now I'll concede a lot of that may be due to editorial pressures etc., but I can't remember ever reading a Custis article and feeling at all enlightened at the end of it.

We have a very good squad, imo we just need a couple of class signings to really improve us. And of course letting our young talents further develop and give them playing time

Is he connected? I'm not sure anyone is really well connected when it comes to United. We have shown the ability in recent years to keep our transfer dealings under wraps and I feel that when they are blown in the media, it has more to do with agents or other clubs blabbing.

I really do hope that we give our youngsters a chance, they really are very good footballers. It'd be exciting to see the likes of Pogba/Morrison in the squad :)

What you basing that on?!

Steve Curry on Talksport, who's a Utd supporter, stated that Neil Custis has a lot of connections at Utd and probably knows more about what goes on there than any other journo. Now if Curry can say that then I believe it has more than a little credence

He's also one of the worst journalists ever. Go back and read some of the articles he's written in the past, they are all consistently wrong and rubbish.

yes its exciting times. Our young talent plays great football as a team and plays to the last minute like the first team. The best thing is the depth and varity of player. Thees no question barcelona/the retirements/our poorest away points tally since the premiership started will have an effect and we'll see a fair few changes in the summer. However, we might not be successful next season...but then again we just might. I'm sure we'll play the regular defence with new goalkeeper to start with but then it's anyones guess what we'll do higher up the pitch (with the exception of Rooney and Hernandez)

No thanks.I'd rather not read The Sun or Neil Custis or any of them to be honest. The article just talks about the way a Utd team could look in the near future, of course it's not fact nor is it really very original

Steve Curry on Talksport, who's a Utd supporter, stated that Neil Custis has a lot of connections at Utd and probably knows more about what goes on there than any other journo. Now if Curry can say that then I believe it has more than a little credence

Nah I don't buy that, like Hectic said that guy constantly produces utter rubbish. Isn't he also banned from our pressers?

More to do with target audience I think :)

According to Curry he frequently has had run ins with SAF and has been banned. It remains to be seen if he is banned again.

 Are you even remotely serious? Custis connected to Utd? I done heard it all now

Only going on what I've heard, it's not my statement that he is..not saying it's fact.As for being connected it simply refers to having contacts in the club not suggesting that top players or execs speak to him.

I'm only going on what Curry says, and he's a local lad who's been supporting and reporting on Utd all his life. Now I'm thinking...I've always found Curry to be pretty good and if he says something I'm more likely to take it on board.

Again it could all be rubbish

I can see the logic Inigo, but from all the Custis' articles I've read over the years, I can only apply sense to this, if he had any sort of inside source, or connection to anyone, he wouldn't sprout the consistent shite which is nearly all guesswork that he does. You wouldn't be running stories from forums, posted just 24 hours earlier, quoting the same 'unconfirmed source' stuff if you had real information from people at the club. He's been wrong on nearly every issue he's tackled with United, and his most consistent trait is a lack of point, it's just hyperbole about nothing, without sources, truth and anything actually happening. He likes to flirt with disaster scenarios at United, flops and fans getting angry, and players frustrated with Fergie, there's never any substance to it, which wouldn't be the case had he actually someone telling him anything worthwhile.

Mate Curry can say all he wants but from pure bullshit about United that comes from Cuntis' mouth it should be evident he's not connected for shit. I mean look at the prime examples given by Hectic. It doesn't add up mate.

Fergie banned him from United for ages, and then sent his brother out too for being related ....Hardly that well connected.

maybe valencia will become rightback, leaving nani as the rw.
