Arsenal's Wenger said pursuing Japan midfielder Nakata
TOKYO, June 21 (AFP)- The coach of English champions Arsenal, Arsene Wenger, is out to lure Japanese World Cup star Hidetoshi Nakata from Italian side Parma, it emerged here Friday.
Arsenal's French forward Sylvain Wiltord is unhappy playing on the right of the Gunners' attack and is ready to move on and Wenger wants to fill his place with Nakata - according to a front page splash in the Japanese-language daily Sports Nippon.
Nakata, who scored in Japan's 2-0 win over Tunisia last week, was in line to join Arsenal a year ago only to have Wenger go cold on the idea and Parma moved in.
But now Arsenal "desperately want Nakata's attacking power, even moving him from midfield to forward," the paper said.
Wenger has been in Japan for the World Cup, making regular TV appearances as a commentator. He has reportedly dumped his current Japanese midfielder Junichi Inamoto despite his two World Cup goals.
Inamoto spent last season at Highbury stuck in the reserves after a much-publicised transfer from Gamba Osaka.
Japan's World Cup is over after a rain-soaked 1-0 loss to Turkey on Tuesday in their first ever appearance in the second round.
