I bought Red Issue at the match on Monday night and they had an interview in it with Fergie, which was quite interesting.

The reporter asked about strikers and Fergie said he had tried to do a deal before the WC for a striker, but the club wanted to wait to see if he had a good World Cup, so they could hold out for more money.

Fergie said, whaddyaknow, he had a great world cup and so the club held onto him and wouldn't sell.

Then the reporter asked who it was, and Fergie told him, but off the record. Red Issue said that "we would have been very pleased" or something like that.

It can't be Ronaldo -- because even after WC, Inter weren't ready to sell.
Can't have been Rivaldo, because he went on a free after the world cup.
Obviously none of the French players or English players.
It won't have been Klose.

Anyone know who it was?
Duff? (not really a striker)
Vieri?

which other strikers had a great World Cup?

But he's not really a striker, is he?

Besides, Fergie seems to want Scholes or Giggs in that role.

Maybe it was Emile Heskey...
He was unstoppable on the world stage.... <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

Could've been Cisse, even though he didn't have a good WC. Montella, Ronaldinhio, Trezeguet, Crespo also spring to mind.

Other than Ronaldinhio, none of them had a good world cup though did they?

Klose? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

That might turn out to be true and not so funny anymore

Don't think RI would say that we would be happy with the striker if it were Klose.

Perhaps it's Shevchenko, I hear he put a bet on Brazil to win the tournament, that qualifies as a good world cup, isnt it ?

It looks like Ronaldinho. Although Duff is also possible, I don't think Blackburn would really refuse to sell him if our bid is large enough.

Doesn't sound like PSG to me. With their money problems they probably would sell him, although for a high offer.

With the transfer market being in the depleted state that it is, its likely that PSG would let him go for a reasonable price since many of the so called 'Italian Giants' aren't spending like they used to. I think he'd be fantastic for us. A creative/attacking player who can be out and out striker, play in the hole, take free kicks :o , etc.

Probably Ronaldo, Inter had said he was available before the WC but they probably wanted to wait until the end of it for his value to be more realistic (how much do you bid for someone who has been consistently injured for 3 years?). They insisted they didn't want to sell afterwards.

PSG would have been a question of being more expensive but not "unavailable".

I would be happier with Ronaldinho. A lot happier, he has everything we need.

What is your estimate of a "reasonable" fee?
