My favoured formation is 4-4-2 as a 4-3-3 leaves you without enough width. The question is then, for the big games who do I start up front? Rooney is number one and at the moment I'm going with Berbatov as his partner. He has less strength and pace than Tevez but offers more aerial presence. The problem is I feel I am selling Carlos short. I love the little guy. It's causing me terrible problems.

What should I do? In my current season Tevez has only one less goal from the bench as Berb does from starting, but then he is coming on against tired players.

For starters, you could start posting shit thread like this in the right forum.

I've made my own tactic. It's something like this:

Van der Sar
Brown - Vidic - Evra
Ferdinand - Hargreaves

- nothing -

Ronaldo - Tevez - Berbatov - Rooney - Anderson

Yes, I'm serious.

How can that possibly work?!

4-3-3: Hargreaves, Carrick, Scholes; Ronaldo, Tevez, Rooney.

I made it as a joke-formation to play my cousin. Then it turned out to be brilliant. In a way it's very defensive, even very good people are really struggling to find a way through it. If I get the ball I quickly pass it up to Berbatov, and it goes from there. When I get up there I almost only use the one-two pass, meaning I've got Ronaldos and Rooneys running everywhere.

It takes a good attack to score, but it's brilliant defensively against most teams. I've lost a couple to people playing Barcelona, though.

It's defensive? Interesting. Surely you score for absolute fun the second one of that front 5 gets the ball?

The formation coupled with the custom tactics (deep defending, free form attack), means that in defense only Berbatov really stays up, so it's near impossible to get a through ball to an attacker for my opponent. Berbatov is very high up though, so I pass a long (ground) ball to him, and my "strikers" all rush forward. If I get the passing going properly and have a few runs, it's impossible to defend against.

I've been beat a few times with it, but only by people who are clearly very good, and who have got dribbling down to an art. People who rely on through passes are stumped. I'm still tweaking it a bit (well, not right now, my disc is broke and I'm going to try to replace it tomorrow), but that's mostly the defensive positioning of my attackers.

I can put it up if anyone wants it (again, tomorrow at the earliest), with this locker room thing. (Oh, and it's the 360).

I tried it, but hadn't read this post so didn't have the custom tactics on.

The good points:
- Never without options in attack, the break-aways are lightning
- If you put a cross into the box, it almost always finds a United shirt
- Goals for fun

The bad points:
- If the opposition plays with width, you're fecked
- If they hold a good midfield, they sometimes intercept defence-forward passes
- It can let the opposition in a little too easily
- By 60 mins, every player but the 3 at the back has poor energy levels remaining

But as said, I didn't use your tactics, I just had that front 5, Rooney being ever so slightly more reserved with the default settings on. I like the idea though, it would stifle human opponents (I played CPU).

i always use 3-4-1-2 with tevez or rooney behind the strikers

That's definitely one of the bigger issues with it. I've switched somewhat to passing it first to one of the "winger" type players, and then to Berbatov with the one-two pass. I don't often concede goals with the tactic, but most of the ones I do are down to my own stupidity, passing the ball to the opposition outside of the area, etc.

I've uploaded the formation and the tactic to my Locker, and changed permissions to friends only. Add me as a friend (Nemmic), and try it out! Note that it isn't finalized, though, some tweaks could make it work better for you (I'll probably tweak it too).

Edit: I'm experimenting with Ronaldo on top now, Berbatov as one of the "mid" two, and Tevez on Ronaldo's spot on the right. We'll see..

Okay, never mind, my disc stopped working again. I think I'll just return the whole deal, including the console, and get my money back. I'm not buying a new fecking game, and FIFA09 was half the reason I got the 360 in the first place. fecking consoles.
