Murray to turn his back on Davis Cup after GB relegation?

He's spot on, GB davis cup team is a total joke.

If you look at the record it's so embarassing. Murray wins both is matches yet every other match is lost so we still lose all the matches...

He's too good to be playing for them now. They should use this embarassingly poor group to blood some players who can actually win a game. Besides he said he would play but thinks others should be given the opportunity at this level. Because as he said, it is completely pointless fo rhim to play all the matches, get the team premoted just to get relegated again.

Bit of a blinkered attitude though, isn't it?

His playing helps other players to improve. You play with/against the best and you get better. I think his presence would be of great benefit for everybody involved.

Equally, you could argue that if, say, footballers took that attitude the likes of Shay Given or Fletcher would never turn out for their countries ( I know Britain isn't a country in the traditional sense). To my mind it doesn't matter if you're 'too good' to represent your nation/Britain, you do it anyway because it's an honour.

Just my tuppence worth anyway.

But since the GB team only has 2 or 3 players for any one match, he's artificially raising the standard of the team. Basically, he'd give GB a 2-0 start against any of the teams in the Euro-African Group 2, so there's far less pressure on the 2nd and 3rd guy in the team to really up their games, they just need to fluke one other win (probably the doubles, with Murray playing).

It is completely conterproductive for Murray to play in this group. He basically carried the team as it is. He won all his games yet others lost so GB were relegated. He did everything he could. I mean just look at the previous matches, it's always the same. Murray wins his games and everyone else gets defeated.

He is right, he needs to step out to allow others to come in and gain the experience needed to compete at the required level. He isnt "turning his back" he's merely saying it is coutnerproductive for him to continue at this level. It makes no sense for team GB or for him personally. He would risk injury etc playing substandard tennis when his real motivation and goal is to be the best and to win a slam.

I would respect that.
