I was watching the Murray win against his mate Djokovic last night and he really was impressive. Played far more aggressively than late and put Djokovic under all kinds of problems, despite Djokovic playing very well in the 2nd set and Murray struggling with his first serve. He will probably lose to Nadal tonight who looks unbeatable at the moment. But Murray is starting to close the gap to the top 3. Murray is going to win a grand slam, I'm telling you..

Good on him. It is wins like these that will give him the confidence and self belief. I hope he can beat Nadal as then he would really be telling himself that if he can beat Federer, Nadal and Djokovic then he really can go all the way.

What time do you reckon the match against Nadal will be on tonight?

It's on at midnight.

Good win for Murray...

Still don't think hes consistent enough to be in the same league as the top 3. It'll be interesting to watch him against Nadal.

Cheers, i don't have eurosport but i guess i can watch it online.

Yeah he still has to improve alot but it is great that he finally overcame a player he hasn't come close to beating in the past.

From Wimbledon, it's obvious Murray has talent but he is still very incosistent and theres a few major issues he needs to tweak up (the murray dropshot and when to use it, improve both his first/second serve etc etc) but on his day, he seems to be able to beat most players. It's a shame that Nadal is playing like a beast at the moment. My bet is a few more years before he can challenge for a grand slam.

I think you're wrong

I was surprised that reaching the QF at Wimbledon and beating a higher ranked player in the process only rose him from 11th to 9th in the world though I imagine this should push him further.

It is frustrating watching him when he tries to be cute and place balls though I agree with Rams that he will win a grand slam, but in the very distant future.

Bang on, and it's nice to see another redcafe poster appreciate Murray after all the nonsense posted about him in the Wimbledon thread.

Beating Djokovic is a massive result for Murray - he's always put a lot of pressure on himself when he's gone up against the other great prospects of his generation, ie Djokovic and Gasquet, and has subsequently not had the success against then he deserved.

Murray's plan, I think, was always to try and create winning records against his fellow up and comers - to dominate them from early in their careers to make life easier for him later on.

I think he put himself under to much pressure - his first couple of defeats against Djokovic had a massive effect on him.

I agree Nadal is out of this world at the moment, but I'd love to see the feel-good effect from the Djokovic victory carry Murray though. Who knows...

I think you're wrong

I agree with him franco, although I think it would more than likely only happen if he could avoid playing Nadal, either with someone else knocking him out or him being injured. Also the game is littered with 'non elite' grand slam winners over the years, no reason why Murray can't be one of them.

I can see him winning Wimbledon at some stage, the support from the crowd given there being a huge lift for him, and helping to carry him through the tough times in a match.

He's still improving, we have no idea how far this improvement will go.

as Psmith pointed out he is playing at midnight tonight.

He has to be agressive against Nadal or he'll be hammered again. He will certainly have a different game plan to the one he tried at wimbledon. It'll be interesting to watch.

Nadal 1 set up. Murray played well but his forehand is getting bullied a little by Nadal, he was fairly close to winning the set as well.

Murray outclassed again. What a surprise

Of course he was, Nadal is on another level to Murray at the moment, but if you can't see the improvement in Murrays game and the fact that he is getting better with every match he plays you might as well give up tennis franco, maybe it's just because you don't like him?

He impressed me tonight, he played some great tennis and showed he has the game to beat Nadal, just needs consistency which will come as he gets older and stronger.

I stand by my thought that he will win a Grand Slam one day.

Did you watch the match??????? Because I tell you what, he was far from outclassed, in fact it was Murray who looked like the world no. 2 for much of the game. It was a very high quality game. Murray will take a lot of confidence from yesterday's game, he will be wanting another bite at the cherry very soon.

That was the only difference between the two. Murray was outplaying Nadal until Nadal changed his attack to Murray's forehand.
When Murray improves his serving and his forehand, and he will do sooner rather than later, he will be very difficult to beat by anyone.

Agreed. I said this in the Wimbledon thread - it's fecking ridiculous how people treat their tennis players in the UK. To slag Murray because he lost to Nadal is utterly pathetic.

Nadal is on a monumental drive towards the No. 1 slot - he's going to be very hard to beat while he's in the process of dislodging Federer.

It's very obvious to me that Murray is currently one of the top 5 players in the world, and can achieve anything he wants if he remains injury free. I guess some people, like Franco Baresi, will only be satisfied when they've a World No 1 to support.

Agreed, between this performance and beating Djork, he can take a lot from this tournament, as you say confidence being the main thing, having the belief that you can actually beat these guys is so important. He wasn't far away from Nadal last night and as mentioned looked the better player for large parts of the game.

I think it's bascially a question of strength with him him now, Nadal is a power house and Murray needs that himself if he going to match him, more time in the gym and his natural growth with age should see him there.

Plus cut out the wasteful unforced errors that were in abundance last night, far too many.

Murray definitely needs to improve his serve, both first and second. He seems to have become wiser with when to use his drop shots, which is encouraging. Now it's just improving on specific areas and when he can achieve that, he'll be in the same bracket as the best players.

Nadal is really something else right now.

Murray has the game but does not have the mind-set yet.

Needs to work on that part of game.

If Roddick can win a slam - so can Murray

Murray played some great tennis and if he had a little more composure on the big points and maybe that little bit of luck he could have beaten Nadal last night. YOu could see from Nadals reaction how happy he was and releived he was to win that match.

Murray was exellent but Nadal is just Nadal. I think Murray would have beaten any other player in the world last night with that performance.

The problem here is that Murray keeps getting mentally shit on. This must change if he is to aim towards winning grand slams in the future.

He is clearly very talented, though.

Can't believe Federer is out early again, he was lucky to get through the second round against Ginepri.

Good news for Murray though.

Watched parts of the Federer game, he struggled to make the big points in both tie breaks. I think Nadal becomes number one if he wins his next game it will be good to see how Federer reacts.

Murray is playing some decent stuff in the build up to the US open, looks much stronger physically than say a year ago.

Nadal is the new no.1 (almost) and deservedly so.

He has been unplayable this year. Barring that freak performance from Tsonga in the Aussies he could've won the Grand Slam. Murray should reach the final but lose to Nadal comfortably again.

Im quite surprised Federer is losing to the likes of Karlovic, Simon..something's gone from his head/game and he needs to get it back. Biggest test of his career.

Murray will be out by the third round at Flushing Meadows, my moneys on Federer at US Open

It definitely seems mental more than physical, its all about how he recovers from this especially in terms of his standing in the game once he is finished. Recent events have been good for Tennis as a whole thats for sure.

I can see him progressing a bit further than that as he has been playing well recently and is a match talent wise for a lot of the male players on the tour. It depends on the draw etc.

I'm just hoping Nadal and Federer play again at some point.

Can't believe Federer is out early again

Pretty much predicted this before Wimbledon even finished. It's all going as I said, if he'd lost to Nadal in the final... which he obviously did... from there on he's following my prediction to the point so far.

Murray has been playing so well the last 2 weeks, I reckon form wise he's 2nd to Nadal just at the moment. And he gave Nadal a big fright last week (it was a very closey fought contest in which Murray was the better player for long periods) I wouldnt put it past him to beat Nadal if they were to meet. Though lets first see if he manages to make the final. If he can do that then he really will be starting to make his mark.

Henman was better. Henman had only a hill to climb, murray has a mountain.

Gotto to agree with some of youse. On Form he is second to Nadal at present. Playing some supper stuff. Turned that Moya game around from 2-0 down in second.

I'd say it's a Nadal - Murray Final in Cincinnati - Lets hope if it is he does Nadal big time. He needs it for his mental game.
