Mourinho: “You must place a cage around him.”

Of those I've seen only messi himself, Ronaldo (the original) and maradona qualify.

Perhaps george best does so as well?

"Mourinho glazing Messi for 5 minutes straight"

It applies to any GOAT-tier midfield maestro more than Messi, imo. The teams that successfully stopped Barca, Madrid and whichever Italian team Pirlo was playing for did it more by limiting what Xavi, Iniesta, Kroos, Modric and Pirlo could do on the ball than by focusing on the danger man up front. Messi can't do anything if he doesn't have the ball, and it's easier to prevent him from getting it in the first place by suffocating his supply than to stop him from doing anything after he receives the ball.

Recently ETH built a cage around De Bruyne in the final and effectively took their entire attack out of the game.

He’s saying he is inevitable and as such, you must prepare for the onslaught. I don’t think it’s feasible to kill supply to a player that will simply roam away from any intended nominal position if the ball isn’t coming his way. He’d gladly go to the halfway line if necessary.

I disagree. Maybe any other attacker, but not Messi (assuming you mean he's in the same team as another GOAT-tier midfielder of course).

Building a "cage" around Xavi (or Iniesta) means you would most likely have to go man to man with Messi, which is suicide.

Overall, i'd agree though. If it was Xavi playing with a Villa, Torres & Pedro (for Spain as an example), you'd shut Xavi down no question.

Oh, I figured that bit, more the terminology: is that common against certain players, ‘caging’ them?
Never heard of it before.
Eh, against the likes of Maradona, Messi, etc, the kind of players you absolutely have to shut down in special games...

So it’s a recognised thing, then? Cool!

Is it spoken about on your TV shows/magazines when it does occur, or just seen as a given?

If press reports are to be believed, it was actually Wilcox who built that cage

Every time pre-injury R9 got the ball, it felt like a goal was inevitable

I mean it wasn't new, but it something extraordinary for extraordinary players and circumstances. Obviously it is remarked upon

New for me! Never heard of it before today, although the general principle of a man-marker a tracker and a sweeper-upper has been around for a long time, but I didn’t know of a recognised ‘cage’.

So has that been utilised for anyone other than Maradona, Ronaldo and Messi, that you know of? Forgive me if I’m treating you of the fount of knowledge for this newfound tactic.

Dunno. Don't remember anybody trying that against Ronaldo, Maradona faced something similar multiple times and Mourinho only did that against Messi because Iniesta was injured

OK. Cheers, and appreciate you letting me annoy you about it!

Just something new that I'm inquisitive about now.
