Long hair is an unpardonable offense which should be punishable by death.
Steven Morrissey

My parents were worried about me, certainly when I became so deeply interested in music and people like the New York Dolls who, at the time, were very peculiar indeed.
Steven Morrissey

That's why I do this music business thing, it's communication with people without having the extreme inconvenience of actually phoning anybody up.
Steven Morrissey

When I'm lying in my bed I think about life and I think about death and neither one particularly appeals to me.
Steven Morrissey

In January 2006, Morrissey attracted criticism after stating he accepts the motives behind the militant tactics of the Animal Rights Militia, saying "I understand why fur-farmers and so-called laboratory scientists are repaid with violence - it is because they deal in violence themselves and it's the only language they understand."[65]

Morrissey has criticised people who are involved in the promotion of eating meat, specifically Jamie Oliver and Clarissa Dickson Wright — the latter already targeted by some animal rights activists for her stance on fox hunting. In response, Dickson-Wright stated “Morrissey is encouraging people to commit acts of violence and I am constantly aware that something might very well happen to me.” The Conservative MP David Davis criticised these comments, though his party leader David Cameron has claimed to be a Smiths fan.[66] On 27 March 2006, Morrissey released a statement that he would not include any concert dates in Canada on his world tour that year — and that he supported a boycott of all Canadian goods — in protest of the country's annual seal hunt, which he described as a "barbaric and cruel slaughter".[67] The comedian Russell Brand, who is also a vegetarian, regularly stated on his BBC Radio 2 show that Morrissey was his hero and often played his music and read out emails Morrissey had sent him.

The Smiths are feckin' genius.

Morrissey is brillaint, but a cock.

I dont see why any of this makes him a cock?

It does'nt.

Infact that's the sort of stuff that makes me like the bloke.

Me too.

The guy is a genius.

I don’t necessarily agree with all his opinions, some of which should not be taken too literally, but you cant say he is a cock just because he speaks his mind.

What do people want, more sterile musicians who have no opinions and no awareness of what is going on in the worlds?

I suggest that scholesgoals sticks to watching X Factor.

I can say he's a cock because he speaks his mind, because his mind is odious.

No, i dont want "sterile" musicians, i want musicians who can make good music, they arent fecking politicians, they aren't great people, they are and should be just incredibly talented musicians. You can write great songs about nothing, but the talent you have as a songwriter should not play second fiddle to your image.

I'll choose to ignore that last remark as it displays a complete ignorance on your part that because i dont particularly take to the musings of a condescending, arrogant heartless dickcheese, i must be in some way uninspired, one of them. The way that you so stated that i should "go back to watching Xfactor" to me has indicated that you are of the same vein. That you consider yourself above me because you are a purveyor (or not as the case may be) of certain esoteric truth.

Oh sorry, got to go, antiques roadshow is on.

The guitarist from the smiths is pretty good though.

+1

went to see Morrisey in Kilarney a few years ago, wasn't a fan but g'f wanted to go. Put on a good show. He stayed in the same hotel as us although we didnt see him. Listen to him and the Smiths regularly since.

All depends what you want. I like musician who write and perform great songs with meaning and also have a bit of substance behind them, which comes across in their lyrics. Usually those factors go together.

But you can have great songwriters who seem to pluck the words out of the sky - i.e. Noal Gallagher.

Oh, and you clearly didnt "choose to ignore that last remark".

"dickcheese" - please grow up, you sound like Beavis & Butthead.

No, you're right. i did originally intend to ignore it, but it got under my skin! good one.

I agree with you, its important as an artist to have some kind of motive for the songs you write, it imparts more oomph into their effect, but that doesnt mean you have to be an arse about it!

I remember him saying in an interview, i dont really have any friends, nor do i choose to. He's just being a wanker, sorry.

Glad you agree.

Me being an arse?

Your the one that stated it of by saying "he's a cnut.... hth" with no reasoning behind it.

Then you find some quotes which prove nothing - great work.

Perhaps thats just how he wants to be.

no not you being an arse... him.

i was being inflammatory, but you must admit, hes an acquired taste.

Its a hard feeling to put into words, as you have probably noticed, but he seems to be very "oh woe is me, you wouldnt understand my troubles" while at the same time making people feel small for some vague disassociative reason. He seems to be heavily self involved, and very self important, and it just irritates me to such an extent that i involuntarily say *cnut* under my breath whenever i hear his name.

There are worse people for sure, and this is only the internet

Fair play - i know what you mean. But i think that the way that people come across is not always the way they really are.

Apparently, he is quite personable to his "friends" - i think he does play up to the media though.

Like Ronaldo - hes a cnut, but hes our cnut!!!

The Smiths were brilliant. But the Smiths weren't just Morrissey, or just Marr either, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce were important too, especially Rourke's bass sound, which was very unique.

I like Morrissey, but loved The Smiths. I think from watching a few of Morrisseys interviews, he comes across as a bit of a prat and has a touch of weirdo about him too

Does his talent play second fiddle. I would say not, he is one of my favourite musicians, particularly from his Smith days. I've never really seen him as having an obvious "image" that he promotes above his talent. Sure he has some different political views to the norm, and is happy to push his agenda but I don't see that as being primary to his song writing in any way.
