Keano, Keano: United swoop for twins
March 26, 2009
TWO twins are following in the footsteps of a famous namesake after joining Manchester United.
William and Michael Keane, of St Bedes College, have just signed signed contracts with the Premier League leaders.
Steve Fallon, who is head of football at the College and a lifelong Manchester United fan, said: "The College is delighted that William and Michael have both signed contracts at United next year.
"They will hopefully go on to equal or possibly excel the success of another former Bedian – the striker Neil Mellor, who signed for Liverpool in 1999 and broke into the first team in 2002 playing in the Premiership and UEFA Champions League."
The signing continues the long tradition of links between St Bedes and Manchester United Football club, which dates back to the Busby era when one of its former pupils, Rev Fr John Williams, was offered a contract with United but turned it down to become a priest.
This tradition was continued by former United coach, Brian Kidd, who has helped out in the past offering a wealth of advice to the Whalley Range college’s First XI in preparation for crucial games in National competitions. Sir Alex Ferguson has also visited the college on a number of occasions.
His most recent visit was last year, when he was the guest of honour at the National Independent Schools six a side competition, which was won by St Bede’s.
The Keane brothers, who live in Heaton Mersey, have been playing together in teams since they were aged nine. They were first spotted by Manchester United while playing for South Manchester Juniors where they won the league for two years consecutively. William plays as an out and out striker and during his two seasons with South Manchester scored 125 goals. Michael plays in a more defensive position, either centre midfield or central defence, he is not averse to scoring himself. He netted 65 times over the same two seasons.
The pair have been signed to United’s Junior Academy for the last six years and the scholarship contract is the next step towards their goal in becoming professional footballers.
When asked about how they felt about gaining their new contracts, William said: "We were really happy and relieved because all season there has been a massive build up to it.
"It makes all the hard work of the last six years all the more worthwhile.
"Our parents were delighted as we got offered our new contracts just before our birthday, so we had a double celebration that weekend."
