Fabian Ayala Close To Joining Leeds United

Ayala is very near to a move to the Premiership
SoocerAge.com's sister site Rete.it are reporting that Leeds United will officially clinch the signing of Valencia defender Fabian Ayala.

The Argentine has been linked with the Premiership side who are looking for a replacement for Rio Ferdinand who joined Manchester United for a British record fee of £30m last weekend.

Although he is under contract at Valencia, it's reported that the clubs are very close to agreeing a fee, thought to be in the region of £9m, and a move could be finalised tomorrow.

IF this comes off will it be a good move for Leeds?

Full name: Roberto Fabián Ayala. Also known as "hard as nails crunch-tackling psycho-bastard".

9m is peanuts, Leeds should be loving it.

£9 million for a 29 year old isn't exactly peanuts but if he gives good service for 4-5 years, I suppose he's worth it.

Look at it this way, Leeds have got a player at his peak who will last them for as long as Rio would have lasted with them AND pocketed a 24m bonus in the process. All this when money is what they are most needing in the short run.

Can't see anything wrong with it.

I thought it made more sense to get Ayala for 9m now and Rio for 20-25m next year after Blanc retires, forming a great partnership for 2-3 years. I guess SAF is confident on O'Shea growing into a first team player this year. Otherwise we will be shopping again next year. <img src="graemlins/nervous.gif" border="0" alt="[Nervous]" />

I think he'll dump O Shea and groom Wes for a first team place in 2003/04. I mean, Blanc has involvement in training the younger players now and despite Blanc's performances on the pitch (at the beginning of last year) he is still a vastly experienced player with a lot to offer. I think that Silvestre and Wes (maybe O Shea too) will learn a great deal this season...

Wes hasn't really inspired much confidence in me and it is getting a bit late for him to do so (I wish he does though).

I don't know, I have this funny thing with CBs who can play fullback, I have rarely seen anyone being great at both as oftentimes the virtues in one position turn into defects in the other.

If you list the best fullbacks around you probably won't come up with any who would be a first choice CB (Carlos, Cafu, Lizarazu, Candela... I'm not a big fan of Silvestre or Gaz being CBs unless needed).

Maybe Rio can get Wes to grow??Rio was similar to Wes when he went to Leeds.

About Ayala he would be a great replacement for Rio.

You do have a point. However, I think the main reason why Wes hasnt shone like Rio did at WH was because he hasnt ever really had a consistent partner in the centre. Its always been Stam, Blanc, Johnsen, G. Neville, Silvestre or (occaisionally) O Shea. When there has been a consistent CB to play with, he couldnt get in the side. Its a dead cert that Rio will play 95% of the games next season (barring injury) so I think that he will now have a partner that will weak in week out, improve him.

Personally, I dont see Blanc making a full season this year. He looked Knackered in the last third of the season. It could be Wes' chance to shine.
