Kind of expensive I think......

I really don't want it to be true. What kind of logic it is to spend 30m on one Rio Ferdinand, when we may be able to get BOTH Thuram and Ayala (both better than Rio) for around the same price?

Totally agree - this Rio talk is nonsense. If SAF has (as reported so it miust be true) a budget of £30m to spend then why waste it all on one player when you can get two of the class of Thuram and Ayala for the same?
Besides - Ferdinand is very much like Wes Brown - wnat's the point in throwing £30m at Ferdinand when we have Brown already there?

With 30m, I'd be expecting Nesta, not Mr 85min.

I think Ferdinand is a little overrated. he reminds me of Campbell - looks good 85% of the time and during the other 15% is prone to costly errors. Personally, as with Campbell I'd prefer he didn't join us.

Must be better than Brown looking good for 15% of the time...... ;)

Do you really want a central defence of Thuram and Ayala? Both non-British Isles, neither likely to stay at United for more than a couple of years.

We're in danger of turning into Chelsea IMO. Ferdinand is class and is going to get better.

He says he'll stay loyal to Leeds and I trust him on tha one. Unless Leeds do a West Ham and agree to sell him if the price soars.

However there is no way Leeds will want to do a Cantona with the mood at Leeds so bad so I doubt they will be tempted at any price.

But if leeds do a west ham, and o'leary does a wilkinson and sells him to us, then we won't have to do a chelsea, and buy some over-aged foreigners. what would be best if is yorke did a cole, and if villa did a blackburn, in taking him off our hands, so that di canio could do an ince, joining us from the hammers, and then we could do a good bit of business.... getting a cantona and an ince in exchange for a cole...

if UTD had chelsea's defensive record last season they may have won the league <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />

ferdinand may very well get better i'm sure he will but everybody though wes brown would be established quality by now. we should go with ayala and thuram who are already "better" and cheaper.

Stam and Johnsen weren't english either btw.

True, Stam and Johnsen weren't but Cole was, Yorke practically was, Sheringham was, Irwin was etc...

And they're all gone.

Or is Arsenal's recent success changing your mind about the value of having local players forming the backbone of your squad? It hasn't changed mine.

Quick note - the players I mentioned are British-Isles players not necessarily English. (I counted Yorke because he's played here for so long). You know what I mean...

O'Shea is fairly local, as is chadwick and stewart. My point is though, what difference does it make having Thuram and Ayala to Stam and Johnsen? None. And using Dwight as an example was pure desperation! ;)
