This is an odd one.

This is what has happened so far.

When Chelsea sent Salah on loan to Fiorentina as part of the Cuadrado deal, Fiorentina were given the option of triggering a clause in the agreement that would send Salah on loan there for another season.

Salah obviously had a very good 6 months there and Fiorentina decided they wanted him for next season, so they promptly activated the clause in the agreement and paid Chelsea the agreed upon £1m in loan fees. All seemed like it should.

Here's where it gets a little murky. It turns out that, for reasons only clear to Fiorentina, they paid the loan fee without really knowing exactly where Salah stood. He told them he'd be happy to stay, but he wanted a pay rise. Fiorentina put an improved offer on the table, but it wasn't high enough apparently and talks broke down. His agent then informed Fiorentina that Salah would not play for them next season.

Fiorentina released a statement to the press threatening to take legal action against Salah.
"Through his representative, the player has rejected our improved contract offer and expressed his desire to join another club. He has also informed us that he does not intend to respond to our request for him to report back for pre-season training. As a result of the above, we have placed the matter in the hands of our lawyers so that they may assess all possible courses of action in order to protect the club’s rights.”

The following day his agent spoke to the press with scathing words for Fiorentina.
Please note, in response to the Viola’s Press release, that at the moment Salah is a Chelsea player. We referred to the document signed by all [three] parties in January, which is clear, crystal clear, and it’s regrettable that Fiorentina are now talking about legal proceedings.

It’s very sad to see a great club like Fiorentina make such pathetic attempts to renege on their agreements, and their written contractual obligations. Salah would like to play for a club with different moral and professional values.

So this has turned from a pretty straight forward deal to one of the messiest sagas I've seen in a while. Salah's agent still insists that Salah will not play for Fiorentina next season. He also says Salah will play for another Italian club. Meanwhile, Chelsea have unwittingly been dragged into a mess they had no hand in creating. And what happens to the £1m Fiorentina have already paid to Chelsea for Salah? Do Chelsea pay the money back?

The best and most sensible resolution would be a transfer ban and point reduction for Chelsea.

Not difficult is it.

Salah returns to Chelsea. Fiorentina get there £1 Mil back.

Easy as that...

I don't see how Fiorentina can force Salah to play for them. It is a loan, and the player has to accept it. If he doesn't, Fiorentina should not be able to do anything.

Unless there are some hidden details there.

Yeah, read this earlier. Would be utterly bizarre if they didn't ask Salah about his decision before doing the deal with Chelsea, cant see it happening. I think he said yes to staying but has received a better offer since which he wants to take.

It would appear very simple, but Fiorentina have gotten their lawyers involved, who seem to think they have a case.

Salah can't sign for Inter, as his agent mentioned was a possibility, without Chelsea's permission, and according to reports, Fiorentina are going to sue Chelsea too, if they allow this to happen.

Fiorentina should sue sure, my suggestion is probably what will happen IMO in addition to that.

Fiorentina've warned Inter over it because they approached him while under contract with them apparently, continues to become even more of a farce.

My only question is how is he negotiating a pay raise for the loan? My understanding was that he has a contract with Chelsea and is paid X amount p/w. When on loan, he still gets paid the same amount, whether by chelsea, fiorentina, or a combination of both.

I've never seen a player get loaned somewhere and refuse it because he couldn't ask for more money while there. Surely if he wants a raise...He would need to negotiate that with chelsea.

That being said...like someone mentioned above...If he doesn't want to play there. Send him back to chelsea and give fiorentina the 1m back.

Nope. The player can negotiate if he wants to go to loan or not. Chelsea cannot force him to go in loan to some other team. If he goes somewhere he is free to ask more money or something like that. Otherwise, he can stay at Chelsea.

I know he can't be forced to go on loan...just never heard of players getting a different wage while on loan.

Send Cuadrado back to Fiorentina, let Salah return, give them their money back. Easy as that.

Perhaps Fiorentina agreed to pay 100 percent of Salah's wages, now they may want to increase that to 120-130 percent but Salah doesn't want it.

I suspect there is going to be a bit of poring through the contracts and documents to find the exact wording.

Not being an expert in these matters, I can imagine it could be something like whether the loan extension is treated like a separate, different loan or a continuation of the previous one, and whether [at time of the original deal] Salah signed purely for that initial period or with an understanding that it could be extended.

However it is interesting the talk about him having a pay rise as well - perhaps I am just too used to FM but I thought that the clubs would just agree on the split of Salah's wages, rather than Fiorentina actually paying him a salary which he/they could then negotiate or alter.

Very bizarre.

Its actually easily resolved. Chelsea need to pay Fiorentina their money back, they paid for the loan, the player doesn't want to go on loan there so Chelsea own fiorentina their money back. Simple, I'd love to hear any reasons why Chelsea should hold onto money paid for a loan that won't be happening for a player they have under contract.

It depends on the terms of the loan. Fiorentina apparently had an option to extend it for another season but I don't see how they could force Salah to play for them against his will, he is a Chelsea player, not theirs. Chelsea need to return the fee, and that's that.

I'm with Florentina on this one. I don't know the details of the loan deal but it looks lke it was loan deal with option of extending it for a year. Salah must had sign first loan deal in which it was probably written that loan deal can be extended if Florentina want.
Now Florentina triggered this options and they even offered Salah better wages but someone (probably Inter) offered him a better deal and convinced him not to play for Florentina and he is not respecting what he agreed.

And this solution that Chelsea pays back 1m pounds and all will be well is not correct. Loan extension was part of the Cuadrado deal and it lowered Cuadrado price and if Salah does not want to respect this contract/option Chelsea should pay some sort of compensation to Fiorentina.

Salah's agent has said that the contract is "crystal clear" with regards to all three parties needing to agree on any extension to the loan. If that's true (and a football agent would never lie) then it's Fiorentina who are not respecting what they agreed. I guess if is is as clear as that, it won't even make it to a court.

Yeah it did seem at the time that this 18 month loan was why the Cuadrado fee was reasonably low, 23m or so when he was touted at 30m+ after the world cup. Chelsea probably figured it would be like a short transfer to put him on the shop market and raise his value, whilst for Fiorentina it was a decent way of getting a quality player they can't really afford for 18 months. You can see why they aren't happy that they aren't getting their side of the deal.

You make it sound as if Chelsea have refused to refund the 1M which clearly isn't the case. If they were to get a transfer fee from Inter then I'm sure they'd be delighted to refund the loan fee.

Quite simply we are unable to even properly speculate without full knowledge of the contract details though I'd be very surprised if Fiorentina had gone ahead with the extension without having first discussed it with Salah. Though it seems likely it's another case of a money-grabbing player looking to ditch his contract when something better came along. Nothing new there then.

When did he said this. He only said all parties agreed the loan deal in january which is crystal clear but he didn't said if it was extension option in this contract or not. Usually the extension option is in the first contract and it is only the club who decides if it will use the extension or not.
Clearly Salah got a better contract offer from Inter and he is looking how could he terminate a loan deal.

And football agents lie all the time.
Salah would like to play for a club with different moral and professional values.
The moral thing is to respect a contract with the club and not looking for all possible ways to screw the club.

And the last think, i don't believe for a second that Florentina would pay 1m pounds to Chelsea if it wouldn't all been agreed. It is clear who changed his mind since then and i really support Florentina in this case.

I don't know when the agent said it, not sure why that matters though. "Fiorentina have the right to extend the loan for a year for €1 million, but the player has the right to veto that, so it all depends on what the player wants to do," Savini said." Unless the agent is telling an outright lie (certainly possible) then it's pretty black and white.
