Tactics P-Nut

Playing a 4321 Christmas tree formation. We'll allow opposition defence to have the ball, but press once it goes into the midfield.

I've got a rock solid midfield base provided by Goretzka, Casemiro and Matuidi; contrasted by the guile and creativity of Eriksen and Silva. Aubameyang will obviously play on the last line of the defense, using all his pace to latch onto the through balls provided by my attacking midfielders; of which there aren't many better currently playing the game.

Defensively I have quite a few young players yet to reach their peak so I'll go into a bit more detail with them.

Kimmich needs no introduction as he has established himself as the heir to Lahms throne and looks every bit worthy of the title.

A three-time Ligue 1 champion before his 23rd birthday, Presnel Kimpembe has achieved a difficult feat – winning regular playing time in central defence for Paris Saint-Germain, despite stiff competition. He has done so thanks to a versatile array of gifts.

A truly modern centre-back, he combines an understanding of the game with superior technical skills and a desire to build from the back. His elegance, passing ability and tackling acumen have naturally led him into the France set-up, where he looks set to thrive for many years to come.

Rugani has gone from strength to strength since making the step up to first team football. Helping Empoli get promoted from Serie B in 2014, he was crowned Serie B player of the season, the following season he played every single game in Serie A and didn't receive a single booking, with his performances earning him a move to Juventus. He has since broken in to one of the tightest defences on the planet and never looks out of place.

Kolorov is my one well known defender universally as he spent several seasons as City were his delivery from wide caused teams nightmares constantly.

Backing up my defence I have Oblak, another player who is amongst the best in his position currently playing the game.

Tactics Don Alfredo

My side is built to play some breath taking attacking football, controlling the centre of the pitch and breaking through at the flanks. Neymar and Cavani are two players who scored 50 goals in a season at their peak, this goalscoring prowess alone will blow most opponents away. Add Nani with his pace and trickery to assist them, and you have a front 3 ready to take on any back line in the world.

To give them the platform to shine, I opted for a dominating midfield in Pjanic, Dembele and Witsel. Miralem Pjanic is a brilliant playmaker and probably the best CM in the world right now outside of Real Madrid. He can distribute the ball to my attackers, evade any pressing attempts with his dribbling ability and put in a very decent shift defensively thanks to his strong work-rate. Moussa Dembele complements him perfectly with his physique and ball-carrying ability. He is very good at dominating the midfield, having proven himself in EPL for years against several big name midfielders like Carrick, Pogba etc.

Axel Witsel has mostly played outside of the top leagues during his career, but he had a very impressive World Cup with Belgium. He was the only DM at times, having to cover for De Bruyne next to him. He is technically very good, knows how to position himself and his passing ability is well above average. At the moment, he is the best midfielder at Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund and is putting in performances which are simply outstanding.

My backline is built to be rock solid to let the guys up top concentrate on attacking, yet they are no mugs on the ball. Especially Rudiger and Florenzi are very good at bringing the ball out of defence, either with long diagonal balls or quick vertical passes on the ground.

In goal is Thibaut Courtois, the best goalkeeper of the 2018 World Cup and one of the best in the world. He has a nice understanding with Cahill, Rudiger and Luis because of the time spent together and this theme is found everywhere along my backline. Luis knows Cahill from his time at Chelsea, Cahill and Rudiger still play together and Rudiger and Florenzi have played together for 2 years at Roma.

Why I will win:

  • Superior midfield to dominate the game and starve P-Nut’s attackers off the ball
  • Wingers with outstanding 1v1 quality vs Kimmich and Kolarov is bound to lead to goals
  • Cavani is too dangerous to handle for Kimpembe and Rugani
  • My backline matches up very well against P-Nut’s attack, with Aubameyang being the only clear goal threat and Rudiger being a great fit to face him – one of the fastest defenders in the world.
  • The better goalkeeper, proven on the big stage and with excellent shot-stopping credentials

Moving on to the game I'm pretty happy with the way this has panned out.

Kimmich Vs Neymar looks unbalanced at first glance. But having a quick glance at these highlights;

It's interesting the amount of times he has Neymar tracking back. This is the game PSG won as well, in the reverse fixture they got beat 3-1, so you'd expect to see even more tracking back.

Why I will win:

  1. Superior midfield to dominate the game and starve P-Nut’s attackers off the ball
  2. Wingers with outstanding 1v1 quality vs Kimmich and Kolarov is bound to lead to goals
  3. Cavani is too dangerous to handle for Kimpembe and Rugani
  4. My backline matches up very well against P-Nut’s attack, with Aubameyang being the only clear goal threat and Rudiger being a great fit to face him – one of the fastest defenders in the world.
  5. The better goalkeeper, proven on the big stage and with excellent shot-stopping credentials

1. Not too sure on the better midfield. Casemiro is possibly the best DM on the planet at the moment. Matuidi is in his perfect position, providing legs to the midfield whilst also covering out wide. Goretzka has performed to an extremely high level and has less responsibility on him in this set up. Silva and Eriksen don't need an introduction and will both alternate dropping slightly deeper to overwhelm the midfield with a bit of class.

2. I've already covered Kimmich, with regards to Kolorov Vs Nani he's got the help of Matuidi who in the current game is perfect to help him out.

3. I've profiled both CBs in my OP, I've no worries on them matching up.

4. Not too sure the defence does match up, with Silva and Eriksen finding the pockets in behind the midfield you need someone able to step in and squash the space. Neither Cahill nor Rudiger are that player.

5. I'd say the keepers are even, Oblak is proven in La Liga and the Champions League. If that's not the biggest stage I don't know what is.

Lots to like about the midfields and attacks. Less said about the centre-halves the better.

  • The better goalkeeper, proven on the big stage and with excellent shot-stopping credentials
I'd have them on par. Oblak's been superb for Atletico in recent seasons. Statistically his shot-stopping is the best in Europe IIRC. Class for Slovenia too from what I've seen, without getting the same opportunity as Courtois has had and, to be fair, taken at a major tourney.

Really like the Eriksen/ Silva combination here.. Both players will have a good game playing between the lines

@P-Nut0712 For some reason I thought you had a different keeper than Oblak, sorry for that. :annoyed: The difference between those two is marginal at best so I won't be banging on about the keepers anymore.

I don't really get the criticism of my centerbacks. Cahill has won the CL, Europa League, 2 FA Cup and 2 League Titles with Chelsea while being a key factor in every one of those. He is also a 3x PFA TotY member, showing the appreciation for him among his peers. His achievements in the later stages of the Champions League are much bigger than anything Rugani or Kimpembe have done to date.

Rudiger is still up and coming, but he has been excellent in Italy alongside Florenzi and he has been good at Chelsea last season despite Conte clearly hating him. Many Chelsea fans say he has been their best CB last season and he started this season with a bang, playing on a near world-class level. Great passing ability, very fast, good in the air and strong enough to fight it out with every CF in the world. I couldn't think of a better fit for Auba except for Varane, who possesses the same qualities and is even better.

What makes Rudiger much more proven than Kimpembe and Rugani is his ability to adapt to different leagues (Bundesliga, Serie A, PL) and he also has shown much more for his national team than those two have, being a key member of the Germany side which won the Confed Cup in 2017. Rugani and Kimpembe have a small body of work at club level and have shown next to nothing at national team level, Rudiger surely has to be rated higher.

Nice little video here analysing Rugani in one game against Milan. You can see instantly how smart of a defender he is just from this one game.

Some weird Italian jokes in there as well

Really like the balance of Pnut's midfield. that just about tips the balance for me with Kimmich on Neymar - I think thats as good a nullifier for Neymar as any in the pool

Lot of people voting without commenting, would be good to get some discussion going if possible.

Both teams have good midfields and attacks but somewhat ordinary defenses. I'm not really sure how this will play out tbh. I think it's clear that one team will play through the middle more, while the other team may have some opportunities to stretch the play.

@P-Nut0712 how does Goretzka compare to someone like Dembele?

Pretty different player in my view. Dembele doesn't have as much impact at the top end of the field as Goretzka who is capable of playing as an AM as well as a B2B. Dembele certainly has more finesse to his game at current and has run games at a higher level. However, I first began to appreciate Goretzka at the Conferederation Cup where he played in an extremely young German side that won the competition.

He was everywhere, putting out fires, travelling with the ball up the park, breaking lines with passes and scoring 3 goals in 4 games.

Thanks.. Any videos? I feel if he can provide creativity/goals from midfield you have a great chance

Nice little scoutnation video of Goretzka.

Can see the class he oozes and the potential that he possesses.

@P-Nut0712 Good game

I did not expect the christmas tree, but that was a really smart idea. Especially with your strong midfielders like Matuidi covering for your attacking fullbacks.
