Mo Salah

Going in studs showing with your foot raised some 12 inches off the ground is reckless endangerment.

If the challenge gets reviewed, there is every chance Salah will receive retrospective punishment.
When deciding if it is indeed reckless endangerment you have to take into account the force used. There wasn't enough force to warrant a red card in this particular case IMO. Think they got this one right.

Force is just one part of it. If someone kicks you in the face, it doesn't have to be that hard to warrant a red card. Showing yours studs with a straight leg onto the middle of your opponents calf, whilst grounded doesn't take much force to be a dangerous tackle. If, on the other hand you come sliding in like Bailly at 100mph, winning the ball but clipping the man, force very much comes into context. A straight leg, studs planted into opposition calf is a whole different story!

So a player can throw a fist at another player's face and the action will be taken depending on how much of a connection he got to the face?

If the ref reports that he has seen it and warranted no action then no punishment I guess

I'm a little hazy on this rule in truth.

I was under the impression that if the ref fails to take action over an incident that occurred during the game then he is presumed to have missed it entirely, leaving it down to a panel of adjudicators to review the incident at a later date and judge accordingly.

Also, I struggle to believe that the ref could have seen that challenge and allowed it to go unpunished. But if that is indeed the case then he should never referee a game again.

Kicking in the face is endangering an opponent but we're not debating that so it doesn't really matter here. He showed his studs yeah of course he did clearly, no force behind the actual tackle makes it not a red card. Showing your studs isn't an automatic red card...

Punching is violent conduct, different rule altogether.

Was that even a tackle? Seems to me like he was going for the ball, and the defender slid into his studs to me.

Would be an incredibly harsh red. Imagine if you did a fist pump after scoring a goal, and a defender near you jumps in and puts his face on your fist. Is that a red for violent conduct?

Studs up challenge, went over the ball when it was thereabout, always looking like he was second to the ball. That's a late, reckless and dangerous tackle. If the image below warranted a red, all while contact on the ball, then Salah deserves a red.

CLATTENBURG ON SALAH'S CHALLENGE

Mo Salah was very fortunate not to be sent off for his challenge on Porto's Danilo Pereira.

The Liverpool forward comes over the top of the ball and clearly plants his studs onto the shin of his opponent.

UEFA guidelines on this type of challenge are clear - anything with studs above the ankle is a red card.

The VAR should have sent the referee to the review area, where I am sure he would have decided that Salah should be sent off. Instead, he is free to play in the second leg.

Bit lucky, but also a harsh red card imo. Due to the lack of force.

It's also one of those slightly soppy ones that gets reffed outside of the rules if you like, it can be quietly ignored because a sending off (of the Home teams star player) raises the temperature of the game, ref gets stick & so on.

Away player down in front of the (any) home crowd might not get away with it.

Yeah. Looks worse in slow-motion or in still images for the baying twitter mob. But the lack of force means the risk of injury from it was minimal.

Ridiculous decision by the ref, especially after VAR review.

Maybe if Danilo had rolled around in the field... would've been different.

Why does Salah get away with everything? Diving, swinging his shirt around his head and now leg breaker tackles?
Seriously, switch that to ANY United player and all hell breaks loose.

He is apparently loveable despite looking like a broken ashtray wearing an oversized wig.

I'm planning to do the PLAP and work in England post graduation, but things like these make me think again some times really.

It's a very small minority of morons condemned by nearly everybody .. all clubs in Europe will have wankers like these, it's not an England thing.

Haven't recent studies shown we're one of the least racist nations in the EU? We're not perfect but the whole 'racist englanders' trope is definitely overblown.

England (particularly London) is one of the most multicultural countries in the world, home to a wide variety of ethnic groups and races.

Pay no attention to that video or those of a similar nature. As said above, these 'people' make up a very small minority of the population.

That's comforting for me. I'll be graduating next year and will start doing the PLAP withing the 2 years after it, so wanted to make sure about things like these.

Wish me good luck. :D

Thank you too btw. :D

Good on the Chelsea away staff for keeping as many as possible out of the game.

Isn't Salah the guy who refuses to shake hands with Jewish players?

Israeli, not Jewish, and he still tricked the shake anyway :

Going to play to play in Israel itself is something some Egyptian players even refused to do, most notably Ahmed Hassan while he was playing for Anderlecht. The reason is pretty obvious isn't it ? Still Salah went there, tricked the shake, scored and led his team through the tie.

How is that exactly compared to abusing racing chants against Islam ? Do you even understand the difference between being Israeli and Jewish for an Arab ?

My personal empirical experience with europeans tells me that the vas majority of the english are not racists. Well, i dont know what people really think and feel but at least in their society racism is seen as a very reprehensible behavior and you can not be racist and want to be treated as a decent person there.

There are other eurpean countries outside western europe where racism seems to be part of the national identity and people apparently are proud of be racists. At least you see them all over the internet begging for attention of the american/west europe alt right trying to prove how racists their countries are.

Leg breaking tackles? you ever played football mate? Or even played touch rugby, netball, rounders, snap or hide and seak? Because of you seriously believe that was a leg breaking tackle then either you are the ultimate snowflake or I'm done with this world

In my 22 years of living I have only come across racism once in England. My parents came across it a lot more when they were younger but that was a long time ago.

It's funny that his dives are blatant cheating attempts, and not just beacuse he was moving fast and getting knocked off balance. He's always actively looking for it.

Has the 'good guy Salah' image died yet? I remember when the media/liverpool fans were desperate to prove he was such a lovely guy.

He's a cheat, and a really obvious one. These are the ones that are so obvious he gets caught out but nearly all the time he goes down he's looking for contact or exaggerating it, a massive part of his game.
