Anyone know of any decent ones? I don't mind the setting, as I'm broad with my tastes, but when I get my new PC I'm going to start MMOing again. WoW is calling me back, and I might well take it up on the offer, but I'd like to hear opinion on whether there's any other decent ones.

I know for a while there were loads of MMOs released to compete with WoW, but none of them came close. Just wondering if that's changed; I've heard good things about WAR, for example.

WAR has a terrible problem: No-one plays it.

WoW is still the one to beat, even though I finally think its drawing close to an end. Not like a WAR-end but an end in which we see the millions playing it.

MMO = Massive Multiplayer Online

And EVE Online i suppose if your looking for something different. I've never played WAR or WoW though so not sure if it is your cup of tea

I always loved playing TLK (The Last Knights).
It's a very high intensity game though. If you want to be any good at it, you should pretty much be online all the time. Which is the reason I stopped playing after three years. Student life was over, got a job and I just couldn't bring myself to playing every now and then. All or nothing for me :D

Aion European release in september. pure pvp and balanced classes.
very hardcore in terms of grind tho, especially the crafting system.
I played Korean beta, so they might tone it down for a carebear western release tho.
But i hope not. Try it if you like pvp you will love it.

Age of conan has made a lot of progress since it came out just over a year ago. They just released their biggest patch yet, I believe. Currently updating so not sure how much better its got but I found it a lot more enjoyable than Wow when I was playing 2-3 months ago. Definately worth a try if you're bored of WoW.

My mates been trying to talk me into playing that for a while now. I keep telling him I'm just not really into those type of games. Might try out the trial though.

Your going to need hard drive space, he tells me the whole game so far takes up 32 gigs

Vanguard was quite fun, Star Wars Galaxies used to be good.

When the feck did you get up here?

We played runescape in primary school, in uni's just sad

 Keep yourself updated with the times man.

I havn't touched that game for three years mind. I only said it because we ridicule everyone who plays it.

ive been a stoic WoW'er since it was released and it is the best out there by a long, long way - unfortunately.

with that said, i tried Age of Conan and Warhammer Online when they were respectively released. AoC didnt last me very long because it was just...bleh, where do i start.
The loading screens between all the different zones make it feel like a bunch of individual zones rather than an actual world.
The lore of conan is nowhere near as wellknown or mainsteam as that of Warhammer or Warcraft, which undermines what you can actually understand while playing.
After the first 20 minutes (which are great) there isnt much feeling of progression...you are suddenly thrust out into the big wide world without knowing who to talk to, where to go etc. The fact that you have to travel/load between zones really underpins this.

My missus and I actually just started trying today the free 14-day re-activation thing on AoC. It has improved for sure, it is more user-friendly, the stats are more understandable. The main issue for me is still the "continuity" - the instanced zones are the root of it.

As for WAR, it was more promising I felt. The main problems was that it was simply so buggy. Unfortunately, with WoW dominating the market to such an extent, why settle for a buggy WAR when WoW has already had years to iron out and perfect those bugs?

Finally, if you want something a bit different, I have heard a lot of good things about EVE Online. Very steep learning curve from what I gather, but if you dont mind it being about spaceships and sci-fi then it sounds like a pretty good bet. Pretty much everything in the game is player-built, from the ships to the factories to the space stations. Player controlled guilds can hand out "quests" to the players (like, go mine 10 of this ore we need, or take this cargo from X to Y). If you go mine that 10 ore, the guild you hand it in to is going to use that to build part of some big missile launcher, which in turn is going to be sold on by the guild for a profit, or attached to one of their ships.
Its like a real economy, not the NPCs with an infinite supply of gold, handing out the same "collect 5 wolf tails" to all players.

Yes, that was AoC at release. In a year things have changed a lot obviously, just like Wow. But unlike wow, things will continue to change and improve. With wow from now on, its all more of the same. Its a 5 and a half year old game afterall. Its a dated framework, which AoC's is fresh and innovative in many ways. WoW will most likely always be the more mainstream game though

Yeah these are corporations not guilds and bar a few NPC corps for beginning players they are all player owned and run. Corps can then team up and form an alliance in order to strengthen numbers to hold a few systems in 0.0 space where the real profit and action takes place.Oh and corps don't hand out 'quests' like what your thinking...you get those only from NPC corps in order to gain standing...allthough a corporation might require you to take part in fleet pvp, mining ops, wormhole ops etc. but the point being its all player controlled....your corp leaders and CEO's are other players

Eve is a very steep learning curve, all the time you are constantly learning new things and the scope in the game is huge. I have found the game to be a lot of fun, especially doing wormhole ops and PvP, its unfortunate i have to take a long break from the game.

Thanks for the info Stemmy. Ive been meaning to try EVE for a couple of years now, just one of those things on the list that I havent got round to yet. Do you recommend it then?
And is there some form of introductory offer or recruit-a-friend thingy that one can do?

Yeah normally you sign up for a 14 day trial...but with the buddy programme if a member already recommends a person to the game they get 30 days free plus the new person gets a 21 day free trial I think....have never done it myself though.

I'd recommend Eve if its something you can see yourself getting into from the get go....if you join the game a bit sceptical you might leave before you can get to the good parts....its a very long haul game, as you said its a whole economy in itself, everything is player driven. Players that have played the game since it was released in 2003 still have skills to learn, many skills to learn and aspects of the game too...honestly the scope is huge!

I do recommend at least giving the trial a go and then joining a corporation to see what its like....won't cost anything and you'll get a gist of what i mean....i certainly can't explain it without spending all night typing out a post hehe

Ive read enough about it to see that I like the looks of it. Gimme 13 days for my AoC trial to expire and if your account on EVE is still active then ill pester you for the recommend a friend crap ;)

Hehe yeah give me a shout....Both my accounts subscriptions end on the 8th of August or there abouts so close but should cover 13 days

There is a new Star Wars MMO out soon.

The trailer looks cool and they will have a massive amount of Star Wars fans who will give it a go. Might be a genuine challenger to WoW.

Here's the trailer.

If Galaxies is anything to go by, it'll be shit.

Just been looking at a game called Champions Online that's set to come out in September. It's the spiritual successor to City of Heroes, which is a game I'd always wanted to play.

For some reason the imbed wasn't working

This is a sandbox game. It isn't a themepark MMO like WoW etc. Game was released early, and has taken a bit of a beating in subscriptions, it is much improved now and needs more players again to really shine.

This is a battle from a month back between the top two alliances on the server.

WoW is number 1 by far.

AoC didnt do it for me, I havent tried Eve.

Although im getting bored with WoW now. It would be good if the quest's were different for each char, instead of grinding the same quests.

I have an 80 lock, shammy, druid and pala though.

Locks rule by a country mile.

Guild Wars is free online.

Basically make a one time payment (like you would any game) and then play all you want.
