If anyone has seen the movie and remembers it.. I have a question..

The precogs predict a murder that Tom Cruise commits and he goes to the spot of murder only because of what they predict. He wouldn't have known about it if they hadn't predicted it.

Isn't that a bit of a paradox?

I've not see the film, but if he still commits the murder then it's not a paradox because by predicting it he goes there. It's a cycle which doesn't change through on each run. They predict it, he goes there, they predict it, he goes there.

It would be a paradox were he somehow able to not commit the murder. Then you'd have the paradox of him not commiting the murder, so they don't predict it, so he commits the murder, so they predict it, so he doesn't commit the murder.

Perhaps the best example is Terminator 2, where the terminator destroys himself to stop Skynet being born. But by stopping Skynet being born that means he was never created in order to destroy himself. Therefore he doesn't stop Skynet being born. Skynet is then born, meaning he can come back and stop it being born.

If by destroying himself he helped Skynet be born then it would not be a paradox, as he's changing nothing each run through.

I've just been officially headfecked.

I hate paradox's, I hate reading about them and this thread made me google it, now I have to rack my brain before I go to sleep to get my head around the Grandfather paradox or I might dream in my sleep, or am I sleeping now, or is life a dream within a dream?

Ah bollocks.

That's not a paradox, it's just philisophical bullshit.

Its the Hutton's paradox apparently, I got over it though.

It is a paradox, but if I remember correctly he doesnt actually murder anyone. Someone else murders the person. Sometimes the 3 precogs have conflicting memories, sometimes one of the three sees something different than the others which questions the whole thing. And this is the minority report that he has to track down.

So basically it looked like he'd done it, but he didnt do it and the proof he didnt do it had been conveniently hidden. Thats if I remember the film correctly anyway.

It's kind of like in The Matrix when Neo goes to see the Oracle and she says 'Don't worry about the vase' before he knocks it over. Would he have knocked it over if she hadn't said anything? Meh, who knows.

Minority Report was a cracking film though, I think Ekeke's got it spot on.

No.. you remember it wrongly.

It was a set up.. Was it not? Tom Cruise got set up for that murder by That old hag Max von Sydow the Director Lamar Burgess..

Cruise goes to find out if he has a minority report, but he doesn't. Agatha(the pre-cog he kidnaps) tells him that herself when he tries to read her memories after kidnapping her.

"Where is my minority report? Do I have a minority report? "
"No."

The name comes from the minority report of the death of Agatha's mother. The woman Ann Lively, whose murder Lamar Brugess(old guy, founder of precrime) committed and tried to cover up -- that's mainly what the movie was about..

:)

Bizarrely, all 4 of you seem to remember it wrongly..

Ah yeah. What about the framing of Cruise though, can't remember that bit - did he kill the guy but because they kind of made him do it because the link with his son? Hazy memory - need some clarity!

They used Cruise as a tool to prove that Pricrime works. Lamar knew that Cruise was a living wreck and any link to his sons death would drive him to murder. Therefore they planted evidence of the guy in the apartment being a molester and allowed Cruise to boil over.

However, they didn't predict that Agnes would have a minority report, a report that was created when Cruise went in to ask about his own minority report. This then sparked the chain of events that made Cruise not murder the guy in the apartment and therefore learn about him being framed.

I think thats more or less it.
