After playing at center back for 8 straight shutouts, Liverpool's goal from Shelvey made it 1 goal conceded in 9 games.

In the first half of the season his 14 games at CB saw 20 goals fly in, he looked unsure at times and made a few mistakes.

But in his last 12 games at CB we've only conceded 7 goals, he's been much improved and much more consistent and reliable. Also these were mostly U21 elite group games, yet he only got better against better competition.

His goals against average went from 1.43 to 1.04, if I have my numbers right. (Of course these stats are of limited value considering the whole team defends as a unit and doesn't take into account who if anyone is responsible for these conceded goals. But not completely useless, I hope.)

Stats aside, he has definitely improved this season.

He has definitely improved as the season has gone on but I think Thorpe moving back into defence from midfield has been a bigger reason for our improved defensive record he's been brilliant lately and probably deserves player of the year

Thorpe is better than Fornasier IMO but neither will get a look in the first team with Jones, evans and smalling the future which in thorpe's case is a pity.

Of the under 21's a year ago I had high hopes for tunnicliffe, cole lingard and Thorpe. Only Thorpe has continued to develop I do hope he gets a chance as he is a composed player and a good leader.

I can see Thorpe becoming our next John O'Shea, able to play any defensive position and even midfield if injuries require. If he's willing to be a squad player and take his chances I'd love to have him around.

And if Fornasier keeps developing like this then he may well get some chances in the Cups and make a name for himself. At least it would be nice to get a big fee out of selling on a youth player for once!

Have to say I'm surprised, he was greatly improved during the course of the year.

The best CB prospect in the u18s, for me anyway, is Ioannou, but I thought he'd stay with the u18s. Grimshaw and McNair are both natural midfielders, so I hear, but perhaps one of them will continue as a CB for the u21s.

This could well signal that Tom Thorpe is going to stay with the u21s for another year.

Thorpe needs first team football. I suspect that we'll see a very young and inexperienced U21's this year.

Yep, quite deliberately I suspect. A lot of clubs these days seem to be fielding much younger U21 and (as logically follows) U18 sides, particularly the teams who have been involved in NextGen. Have a sense we're following suit, especially with the Youth Champions League coming in this season.

Might mean an end to the incredible run of success we've had in terms of silverware at reserve/U21 level but could well pay off in the long run.
