So the nominations for this are up in about the next hour.

Gorillaz
The XX
Laura Marling

Those are three that I'd like to see make it on the shortlist. Apparently Paul Weller is almost a cert to make it for 22 dreams which I've not heard yet and quite suprisingly Dizee Rascal is rumoured to be on the shortlist which I think will be a record 3rd nomination. (edit: I think Radiohead have 4 actually)

but who would you all like to see on the list.

Villagers

Yeah the Villagers record is pretty good. Becoming a Jackal is a cracking tune as is The meaning of the ritual and I saw the dead. Meant to post the album in the '1000 albums' thread actually.

Apparently this is the list

Biffy Clyro – 'Only Revolutions'
Corinne Bailey Rae – 'The Sea'
Dizzee Rascal – 'Tongue N' Cheek'
Kit Downes Trio – 'Golden'
Foals – 'Total Life Forever'
I Am Kloot – 'Sky At Night'
Laura Marling – 'I Speak Because I Can'
Mumford And Sons – 'Sigh No More'
Paul Weller – 'Wake Up The Nation'
Villagers – 'Becoming A Jackal'
Wild Beasts – 'Two Dancers'
The XX – 'XX'

Have 11 of the 12. I am a God.

Nice, I have 7 I think but I should have the rest by the end of the day. Got a favourite?

Or you have awful taste in music.

This is exactly what the mods have been talking about. What does that actually bring to a thread? Why don't you suggest some albums from the last 12 months you think should have made the list or make some actual points on why the list is awful.

It's a toss up between Villagers and Mumford for my favourite. I very much hope that Villagers win it though, Conor O'Brien deserved a nomination for his previous band, The Immediate at the very least, so I'm delighted for them.

From what i've heard I'd probably go for Villagers or the xx. Haven't been able to get into Mumford at all, I even saw them a few weeks back at hop farm festival and they were just a bit bland. Villagers were on the bill too but I couldn't get the lass I went with to move from the main stage.

I've got a sneaky feeling I am Kloot may be a good album. Suprised Four Tet or Delphic didn't get a shout, although I didn't particularly like the latter.

Oh yeah, sorry I forgot the Mercury Prize was awarded to the shittest album of the year.

:D

I didn't say the list was awful. It was an off the cuff remark and one to perhaps bring him back down to Earth having read that he'd just called himself a God.

I have no idea what you mean about mods talking. I do know that untold useless comments are posted on here every minute, funny or not, so that seems a bit rich.

As for the Mercury Music Prize, I've already been beaten to a good example of why the nomination and winners isn't always brilliant...

Well, M People won it once.

Ms. Dynamite (te heeee) also won it once as well.

But that said, I don't think there's a great deal to work with from the past year if I'm honest. The best album I've heard is probably Gorillaz. I didn't even think much of Arctic Monkeys or Reverend & Makers latest efforts and those are two bands I rather like.

I don't actually think I'm a God... Most of them were bought upon recommendations from others. I'm a fraud.

The Villagers are excellent, but I'm fairly sure Weller will walk this prize.

Dizzee Rascal doesn't make music so why he's on that list I'm not sure.

A rather poor list this year. Villagers and The XX released great albums, Corrinne Bailey Rae and Mumford deserve their nominations too. But Wild Beasts and Dizzee's albums were decent at best, and Biffy Clyro's was about 50/50 brilliant and boring. Gorillaz and Plan B really should've gotten nominations. Was Paolo Nutini this year? He definitely deserved a nod if so.

Haven't heard Weller, Foals or Kit Downes Trio yet, will have to give them a try soon.

Mumford or XX as they have made the bigger debut splash as well as being quite excellent albums.

Dizzie is an entertainer I agree, but "disco disco disco disco" is not worthy of a Mercury award.

Just going to have a listen to a few of these. I've started with The Villagers as I must admit I'd never heard of them.

Sounds a lot like someone wants to be Bright Eyes, perhaps with a dash of the first Elbow album in the mix.

Had my first listen to Wild Beasts. A man trying to be Kate Bush. Crap.

Laura Marling: Nice voice, pretty melodies, but nothing special. Typical token female folkie inclusion (in an admitedly folk-heavy year).

The I Am Kloot album, I've not heard, but I have heard a lot of their stuff before. Their debut was a favourite of an ex-girlfriend and they are a local band so I've seen them a few times- mostly accidentally. I quite like them though.

This album, I don't think is as good as some of their earlier ones, but the song Radiation is very good.

The XX won it in the end. Having listened to most of the albums I'd say it's well deserved.
