From the official site:

We are currently in the process of writing to existing club members inviting them to renew their membership for the 2002-2003 football season. Members who are on the Direct Debit scheme will automatically have their membership renewed with payments being taken from their bank or building society in early June. The subscription fees will remain unchanged at £18.00 for adults and £12.00 for juniors born after 1st August 1986. These are UK prices and other fees are available upon request.

Application forms for supporters wishing to become members for the first time are now available. If you wish to apply for forms you can send a stamped addressed envelope together with a letter stating how many forms you require and indicating whether they are adults or juniors. The forms will then be sent to you in due course. The address to write to is Manchester United, Ticketing & Membership Services, Membership Application Form Requests, Old Trafford, Manchester M16 0RA.

The Membership Office is open 09:00 - 17:00 Monday to Friday.

Membership

Mainly as a result of the Heysel Stadium Disaster, in 1986 the Government, then headed by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, recommended that all 1st Division Clubs (now Premiership Clubs) introduce measures in the interests of safety to supporters at football matches. One such measure was to implement membership schemes whereby only registered members of a club could attend games. Initially the suggestion was to impose 100% membership schemes but such was the opposition that the government relented and in our case 50% of our stadium was designated as 'members only' areas.

The Manchester United Membership Scheme was introduced in the 1987-88 season. Some clubs also introduced similar schemes but others did not. Rather than enrolling supporters as members and simply giving them a membership card.
