Mayweather announces retirement

Mayweather retained his WBC title by beating Hatton
Welterweight Floyd Mayweather Jr has announced his retirement from boxing.

Widely considered boxing's best pound-for-pound fighter, the 31-year-old retires unbeaten with a record of 39-0.

The American's final bout was in Las Vegas last December when he knocked out Britain's Ricky Hatton to retain his WBC welterweight crown.

"This decision was not an easy one for me to make, because boxing is all I have done since I was a child," Mayweather said in a statement.

"These past few years have been extremely difficult for me to find the desire and joy to continue in the sport."

Mayweather won six world boxing championships in five different weight classes.

He won a bronze medal in the 1996 Olympics and went on to win world championships at junior lightweight, lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight and junior middleweight.

He'll be back. He'll just sit back and wait for the offers for a super-fight with some up and comer to get bigger and bigger, rather like Sugar Ray Leonard did with Hagler. Or else he'll just backtrack even sooner and fight De La Hoya again.

Thats what I thought, and hope.

The winner of Cotto/Margarito deserved a bash off Mayweather. It's a shame.

Definitely. I don't think he wants anything to do with Margarito especially though. A risky, punishing fight against a relatively unknown (to mainstream sports fans) fighter. Cotto, if his profile continues to rise towards Felix Trinidad levels of popularity, might be worth the risk to him somewhere down the line.

Love his style, one of the best ever p4p and a modern day Ali-type.

Wanted to see him fight Cotto though.

i dont mean to doubt your pugilistic knowledge but who the feck did this guy beat. Hatton was found out and tbh had been found out in an earlier fight even before floyd got him in the ring.

I just dont see it. Hearns, leonard duran, would have killed him

He'll come back when he realizes that although he has other avenues of making money, the easiest and most natural, and most profitable for him is boxing. Also, it's not like he ever takes a bad shot or anything, no one is near as good as him,

I doubt he has any intention of staying retired to be honest. This is just to drum up more interest and money for any future fights. I don't think he wants anything to do with Margarito or Cotto though. Too much risk, too little reward, and Margarito in particular would give him hell.

I don't like Mayweather but there's no shame in a natural lightweight not being able to beat all time great welters like Hearns and Leonard. He would give Duran plenty of problems at lightweight but I'd back Duran to wear him down and beat the shit out of him eventually. But Duran's my favourite fighter ever.

Hatton wasn't found out. He got beat at a higher weight by the best boxer in the world for feck sake. Its not like he was slapped around by Ashley Cole. He's been one of the most dominant light welterweight champions in decades. He just doesn't have a style conducive to longevity or moving up in weight effectively. He'll go down in history as a very good fighter but not a great one.
