You know that winger from Blackpool who has been tearing left backs new arseholes the last few weeks.

Looks a bit tasty, how good is he?

Tell me more.

I've noticed him as well. He looks like a tidy signing for Blackpool. He's only 19 and he's causing plenty of problems for the opponents he's faced so far.

I think he's at the right club for his current development anyway and their footballing style suits his wing play. I hear he's quite capable of playing on either wing so he would do well to follow the Ashley Young route of development.

Only recently got in the teamat Blackpool - had been on loan at Sheff wed (I think).

Looks decent - big, fast a decent finisher. Was linked with a few clubs last season if I remember correctly.

Yeah it was Shefield United.

He done well there and seems to have now found a starting spot at Blackpool. Looks a decent prospect.

It's not confirmed but i've heard he has agreed to play for Scotland, he could be in the squad for the Slovenia game in two weeks.
Pearce was in Blackpool in the last week.

I'm not happy about this one.

He has been included in the latest Scotland's squad.

Scotland show off Phillips in new kit after winger snubs England despite Pearce plea

Matt Phillips rejected overtures from England caretaker manager Stuart Pearce in favour of representing Scotland.
The 20-year-old Blackpool winger, who was born in Aylesbury, was called up by Scotland boss Craig Levein after his Scots-born grandfather tipped off a journalist about his eligibility.
The England Under 20 international has lodged his change of allegiance with FIFA and is committed to Scotland.

Phillips said in a number of Scottish newspapers: 'I spoke to Stuart Pearce personally, because it had to come from me.
'A lot of people might have sat around and waited (for England). But I told him I wanted to come away and play for Scotland.

'I had a number of conversations with him but I haven't just made this decision in the past month. It's been an ongoing thing and something that's always been at the back of my mind that one day I'd play for Scotland.
'I believe enough in my ability to think that one day I would have played for England. But I'm not looking at that now.

'Even if England asked me to play for their Under 21s now, my mind is made up. I fully believe it's the right decision.'
Phillips, who modelled Scotland's new white away strip on Monday, has pulled out of Wednesday's friendly in Slovenia after missing Blackpool's weekend win over Bristol City.
But he is expected to be included in Levein's squad when Scotland face the United States in Florida on May 26.
He added: 'Unfortunately I've had to pull out of the Slovenia game because of a slight niggle in my hamstring but if I'm selected for the next squad, hopefully I can get my first cap then.
'I just felt I still needed to come up here this weekend, meet the rest of the lads and show I am committed to Scotland.'

His choice to play Mickey Mouse football.

Yeah just because he chooses Scotland, now he plays "Mickey Mouse" football. Not being bitter at all then.

Can you blame him? How long would it take for him to break into the England XI?

Right now he's competing against at least half a dozen established players, not to mention youngsters like the OX who will no doubt be claiming a place as their own sooner or later.

He'd have to move to a bigger club first before any of this would happen too, well at least you'd think that would have to be the case.

England haven't won anything from 1966 and have largely been average in the tournaments. By that criteria, all the english players are also playing the mickey mouse football.

At least England are in the tournaments even if they fail to do well in them.

Strange decision really for someone who has grown up in England.

I have a Scottish father, but if I had the talent it'd be the U.S. I'd play for because it's where I grew up and more importantly there's more chances of playing in the World Cup for the U.S. If he's not good enough for England, then Phillips might as well have saved his body the punishment of extra matches played on an International level to no purpose.

There must be more to this story like his grandfather is campaigning hard for him to play for Scotland or some family reason for loving Scotland more.

I don't understand players who pick their national sides based on how much game time they're going to get. Either you represent YOUR country that you feel connections with or not. At club level you can pick like that, at international level I don't get it. That's why players like Perquis and Obraniak will always be a mystery to me.

I've only done a quick read, is there anywhere where he speaks about game time?

Can't blame him for wanting to stay away from the absolute shower of shite that is our English national team. The whole thing's a circus. It's embarassing.

So players shouldn't bother playing International football for countries who traditionally don't do well at International Football? Maybe he believes in his ability to improve Scotland? Maybe he feels this Scottish generation have a good chance of doing better than past generations?

If you're asked to represent a country and you are illegible to do so, why should you not play international football purely because it isn't for one of the bigger nations? Smaller nations have a place in International football too. These posts criticising someone for choosing to play for a smaller nation smack of arrogance to me.

He might be happier playing for Scotland...

I was born, raised and still live in England. If I was good enough to represent my country...it would never be an England shirt I'd wear...so it's not always that simple.

I really dont get it to be honest. How someone can be born in Aylesbury, live his life in England and then decide he wants to play for Scotland.

Im English born and bred but I have welsh relatives, wouldnt make me want to play for them in the slightlest.

Me mum and dad are both Irish.

I was born and bred in England. I'd wear the green shirt with pride..I couldn't give a feck whether England win or lose to be honest.

Plenty of Irish players, past and present, haven't actually been from Ireland. If he was asked by Scotland to play, and felt that he wanted to do it then why not? Maybe they made him feel more wanted than England did. Maybe his Scottish heritage means something to him. I'm sure he has his reasons, and if they're justified in his eyes then that's all that really matters. It's a personal choice, he's chosen what feels right for him.

Quite agree.
