Man United to follow Cantona advice and bid for Marseille ace

Manchester United are ready to follow the advice of Eric Cantona and launch a bid for Marseille ace Mathieu Valbuena this summer.

According to French newspaper La Provence, United are among a string of clubs currently keeping tabs on the playmaker, who has scored three goals for Marseille so far this season.

It is said that United legend Cantona has recommended Valbuena to his former club, as a possible log-term replacement for Paul Scholes.

Marseille want £10million for the 26-year-old midfielder, who is open to a move away from the Stade Velodrome.

"If an offer comes from a large foreign club it is hard to say no," he said. "But now, I prefer to live in the present."

United will have the chance to run the rule over Valbuena when they take on Marseille in their Champions League last 16 clash at the Stade Velodrome on February 23.

Terrible article, since he's injured and most likely won't play either game, and all he says is he'd enjoy a move to a big club, and it's from Talksport, and he's nothing like Paul Scholes.

Besides that, well worth the read.

Glad he's injured though, despite him being an annoying prick with his antics he can be hugely influential and at times inspirational with his dribbling and moments of brilliance.

You have and you saw him score a screamer against Liverpool, I reckon, Ole.

Have you even seen him play? I certainly haven't.

Its amazing how 90% of the CAF has seen every single footballer play.

Played very well when France handed England's arses to them in a friendly a few months back.

Besides that when i've seen him play i've not been overly impressed.

Well I remember that. And I also remember him playing well against England. That's all I've seen of him (or remember) and I reckon that's all most of the CAF have seen of him too.

Would I say we should sign him based on that? No. Would I say we shouldn't sign him based on that? No. Yet people make snap judgments like that all the time based on very little information. This isn't aimed at RDC but a general rant.

I agree and I'm not really sure why people do it - to gain some sort of credibility on here or maybe they believe they can actually judge a player on the basis of a couple of games? I'm not really sure. It really shouldn't be annoying but it happens so often it does somehow become frustrating.

I've watched Valbuena a lot this season because I wanted to see a bit more of Marseille but I wouldn't have a clue whether he's good enough for us or not.

If "it is said" then getting hold of some quotes shouldn't have been that hard!

I only talk about players I have seen play. There are quite a few threads on here I have not even posted once in.

Bunch of reasons. Seen a player a few times and think they've got his quality nailed on in there heads.

Don't like the name/face/team he plays for.

Haven't heard of them and therefor don't want.

Thinking that the purchase of a certain player would hinder their personal favorite to be bought.

General thickness.

I often have these spontaneous thoughts about certain players ability but I don't act on them because I haven't thought them through and would therefor mostly talk shit. Annoying when people do it but I guess most of them don't care.

Is he the little midget who looks a bit like Ludovic Giuly?

yep

why, would you like to purchase him to put him in your garden? i'm sure there are plenty of such garden gnomes out and about in Bourton-on-the-water

Interesting story with him. Marseille were basically ready to give up on him and sell him near the end of 2009. Then suddenly he found some great form, pushed his way to the French set up, made it to the WC team and his value raised enormously.

Mind you, he's a useful player. Remind me a bit of Park. He's got great work ethic and always runs himself to the ground in matches. Also, gets kicked a lot but never complains. It's a common sight to see him with a bloody nose or some other part of the body bleeding, but he just gets on with it. Offers great pace.

Doubt he's up to United quality, but a good player nevertheless. A team wouldn't be wasting 10m if they sign him.

He's notorious for his rolling around and subsequent whining at the referee?!

Definitely stepped up his game and went from a bit-part player to a key player and deserves credit though.

He's notorious for his rolling around and subsequent whining at the referee?!

Could that be because he gets fouled so much during a match?

Can't really blame him for having a go at the ref when he's been targeted by opposition players.

Don't know about the rolling around part. He's a small guy after all, it doesn't take much to get him going. :p

As a player who'd warm the bench and give us option when others are injured yes but as a starter no way !! If you thought Nani was a diving drama queen and Eboue the king of rolls, Valbuena is more than the of them combined.

I haven't seen a whole lot of Mathieu Valbuena to be honest but when I have seen him play he always looks capable of beating a player and getting a goal from midfield, as I have only seen him play a few times though there is no way to know whether he is good enough for us or not. From what I remember though we were also linked with before.

Like when? Always provide evidences if you say something like this.

I didn't think I'd need to because you would've known yourself when you did so - the fact you didn't mention it yourself and write it off as a one-off almost suggests that it happened more than once...but that would be presumptuous.

Everybody in the Premier League wants him. He must be a really bright prospect.

(suggests you've not seen him, but are impressed by the number of clubs looking at him)

Two weeks later, just before he played against us...

I hope we get one of either Alex or Hazard. I don't want both of them to go to Arsenal.

(suggests that purely because of the interest by other clubs, and the consistent interest of Arsenal, you want us to buy him)

Could that be because he gets fouled so much during a match?

Can't really blame him for having a go at the ref when he's been targeted by opposition players.

I'm amazed you knew the story about Valbuena's development but didn't know he's a diving fanny because it's very blatant, as agreed by Spammy and kouroux (Marseille fan).

Well, I guess I have been watching the wrong Marseille games then.
