Can’t think of a better way to make my first ever Caf thread.

It still blows my mind that this was produced in 1997-1998. I don’t think it will ever sound dated. If anything, it still sounds like an album from the future even today in 2025.

Listening to this album on a good set of headphones is a bonafide ‘experience’, excuse the cliche, in every sense of the word.

Every song is essential. The track list is perfectly sequenced. The engineering, mastering, instrumentals, genre blending - everything here is perfect.

10/10.

Agreed, I go back to it again and again. Really looking forward to getting my kids into Massive Attack and all the other great music from that era in the coming years.

I swear I've heard the track Angel in some movie or tv show. Can't remember it!

Put it on recently for the first time in a few years. Still quite special.

I put this album on earlier today. Quality album. Amazing band.

I find them frustrating with their output. Great band, but really should be making and releasing more music, and then playing more gigs. I saw them once at some point around 2010/11. They were brilliant live.

This album (along with Screamadelica) never age and I never tire of listening to them.
Both in my all time top 3.
The third one changes with my mood.

it's perfect. I've been listening to the same couple of albums they released for about 20 years now and it's safe to say I will never get tired of them.

If I had to choose 3 bands that I wish to release new album, it would be them, Portishead and Boards of Canada.

I saw them around 2006/07 I think, to this day still one of my favourite live concert experiences!

And yeah Mezzanine is awesome. Perfect album.

The passage of time stresses me out so much. For someone to recommend this album today is the same thing as someone recommending Pet Sounds when Mezzanine was released. I find that deeply distressing.
I couldn't agree more. I think it's fascinating and unnerving at the same time.

Dummy is firmly in the same tier of quality as Mezzanine also.

I totally agree. The 90s feel like a decade ago.

Passage of time is deeply distressing for ke also, and it seems to be accelerating.

What else would you recommend?

I think this, Dummy by Portishead, and Tricky’s album (Maxinquaye?) are all must-listens.

So many other amazing projects from the 90s and late 80s. I would put Madonna’s Ray of Light in a similar bracket. Bjork’s entire run from Debut to Vespertine also.

The Cure - Disintegration is also perfect.

Heard any Boards of Canada?

This album is so class. Their best in my opinion. I was just in my mid teens and starting experimenting with different stuff and I was big into audio production, music and parties. This majorly stands the test of time. I used to love this on the headphones so much

Agree with those of course.

If you like that kind of thing as much as I do, you may also appreciate stuff like Future Sound of London, Aphex Twin, DJ Shadow, Telafon Tel Aviv, Bonobo, Thievery Corporation, Four Tet, Bibio, and the already mentioned Boards of Canada. Some of this a little more upbeat perhaps, but all of it perfect session comedown stuff, or after midnight listening material.

Good list :) I would add Sabres of Paradise as a fairly leftfield addition. Also, now I mention it, Leftfield! Leftism is such a classic album.

not really similar, but Moon Safari by Air and Are you Shpongled? by Shpongle from the same year.

They're playing at a festival we are a regular at this summer but don't think we will be able to go. Gutted.

Timeless classic.
Leftism is 30 years old this year.
That's how old Help! with The Beatles was when Leftism was released.
