Lost our second game as well. 1-0 to De Graafschap, who lost to Twente yesterday. We're bottom of the group together with Ajax Cape Town.

Lost again, big surprise. 2-1 to FC Twente/Heracles.

We're in great company. It's us, the mighty SV Grol and Ajax Cape Town who've lost all 4 games so far

Some pics, I can only make out Jesse Lingard:

90 min rule + '5+6' rule, now that would be something. At least now we can take some comfort in the Rossis and Piques of this world.

75-goal Matthew snapped up by Man Utd at seven

From the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, first published Friday 16th Mar 2001.

REMEMBER the name because little Matthew Boland is planning on being the next David Beckham!

For the soccer-mad seven-year-old, who plays for Prestwich side Drinkwater Warriors, has caught the eye of scouts for Manchester United after scoring 75 times in 17 games, including 12 hat-tricks.

And the Butterstile CP School pupil knows what it's like to take home top earnings after his grandad agreed to give him a pound for every goal he scored.

Proud mum Julie (31), of Halliwell Walk, Prestwich, said: "It has been a bit of a joke with Matthew's grandad Joe. He said he has had to take out a loan! Matthew scored 11 goals in one game!" Matthew's striking performance on the pitch has prompted interest from a number of clubs, including Blackburn Rovers and the Reds, who have invited him for trials next week, and the youngster currently trains with the Manchester City youth academy after he was spotted by scouts playing for the Warriors.

Although Matthew's dad Christian (27) is manager and coach for the Warriors under-eights, Julie said her son became hooked on football as soon as he could walk.

She said: "Matthew's first word was 'ball' not 'mummy' and he has broken countless ornaments in the house with his football. He is amazing though, his feet are like magnets with that ball!"

Although the Boland family are keeping their options open about Matthew's future, he knows exactly what he wants to do.

Julie said: "He is still very young. But as soon as Matthew knew United had been in touch he said 'Alex Ferguson has found me.' He just wants to play with the big boys. It is his dream."

FLETCHER Moss Rangers must be one of the most successful young football teams in the country with kids as young as seven being constantly snapped up by professional clubs.

Past players include England defender Wes Brown, part of the squad recently knocked out of the World Cup, and Leon Mike who has had a successful career playing at both Stockport County and Manchester City.

In May, a quartet of eight year olds were signed up to Manchester United's football academy at the same time as two other players moved to Manchester City and Bolton Wanderers.

Coach Dave Horrocks put the secret of the youngsters' success down to the attitude that he instills into the team, who train at Merseybank.

He said: "It's not winning at all costs, we're more concerned about the development of the kids themselves than the team.

"Every time we play they are going out there to have some fun."

At the end of last season the seven-a-side squad had to be disbanded after every one of the players was snapped up - three to United and four to City.

Now four young stars of the under eight's team have glittering futures to look forward to as Tico Gavi-Mihedji, Luke Edwards and Thomas Ingham, all from Chorlton, along with team mate Tyler Blackett, have all just signed up to Manchester United.

From the older squads Withington boys Kieran Keeney, 10, and Kyle Bartley, 11, have joined Manchester City and Bolton Wanderers respectively.

Mr Horrocks said: "We have got to be doing something right. I have had the privilege of coaching these kids since they were five years old and you can see the potential in them from the very start.

"These ones just had that little bit extra."

But the rest of the Fletcher Moss Rangers teams are all showing similar potential and Mr Horrocks is expecting to lose even more players.

He said: "I would be very, very surprised if any of them are left at the end of the summer.

"We have had a lot of people scouting. But the next generation of kids is coming along nicely."

MANCHESTER United''s worldwide hunt for talent is coming full-circle...to Didsbury.

On windswept Merseybank, the fledglings of Fletcher Moss Rangers are exciting the scouts of Old Trafford and rivals Manchester City.

Grammar boys pass their cup test
Manchester Evening News
Daily Telegraph
Thursday 20 March 2008

Manchester has its first national football trophy of 2008…. and it hasn't gone to United or City.

The boys of The Manchester Grammar School have beaten the city's two Premier League clubs to the punch by winning the Independent Schools' Football Association's under-15 National Cup.

And they did it with a 3–2 victory over the Latymer School, from Hammersmith, London, at Burton Albion's Pirelli Stadium.

Sam Cantor struck the MGS winner in the closing minutes of extra-time to bring the trophy north.

Lewis Bertenshaw had opened the scoring for MGS before Latymer scored two goals in quick succession to nose in front.

Dan Brown forced extra-time with a curling free kick, before Cantor sealed the win.

MGS Sports Master Richard Lunn said: It's a great achievement to win any national final and it was a fitting finale to a great tournament.

Elliot’s a true sporting all-rounder

24/10/2007

MANCHESTER Grammar School sporting all-rounder Elliot Bullock doesn’t know which way to turn to achieve his ambitions of sporting glory.

The 14-year-old grandson of Ralph Bullock, the founder of the Cheadle bus company, is in the Manchester Grammar School’s senior first 11 for both football and cricket, but knows he will have to steer in one direction soon.

"I love both my sports so much, but I know I will have to decide soon," said Elliot.

"But hopefully that can wait for another two years when I have a little bit more experience."

Elliot’s list of sporting credits is already lengthy.

As well as playing at MGS first- team level - even though he is four years younger than his team-mates - Elliot is an under-14 Lancashire county cricketer, one of the youngest players ever to represent Cheadle Cricket Club’s first XI, and is on trial at the nationally renowned youth development Football Academy at Crewe Alexandra, which is overseen by long-serving manager Dario Gradi.

Recently Elliott also captained his school side to the Lancashire under-14 cup, where he scored an elegant 81, stroking the ball off both back and front foot all around the wicket.

On whether he felt any pressure on succeeding famous MGS cricketers such as Mike Atherton, John Crawley and Mark Chilton, Elliot said sensibly: "I know there is a great tradition of MGS cricket, but I don’t feel the weight of history on my shoulders, far from it.

"It’s an honour to be following in their footsteps and MGS has been so good at spending time coaching me tothis level."
