OI OI!
Alex Ferguson will bolster his strikeforce when the transfer window opens with a move for prolific Brazilian Mario Jardel, according to the News of the World.

The lanky hitman, who scored an astonishing 42 goals in 34 games last season, has fallen foul of his coach at Sporting Lisbon after a split with his wife left him down in the dumps and unable to perform.

Laszslo Boloni is ready to offload his troubled talisman, and he confirmed: "There has been interest from Italy and Spain, but Manchester are in front."

He should come pretty Cheap as well

I see plantebollox has us linked with both Jardel and Schevchenko. Schevchenko for Barthez plus cash is the rumour. Schevchenko would be amazing but unlikely to come I think - that Milan side is looking shit hot so I'm not sure why he'd leave. Jardel is intriguing though. I think he's been the best striker playing outside the big leagues for years now. He's done well enough in Europe for his several clubs and I think he could be a steal as long as he's over his woman.

The same article also said that Fergie is going to offer West Ham Roy Carroll plus 3 million for Calamity James- which is something I don't think any right mind thinking United fan would encourage- the scousers would have a field day, us signing one of their rejects and part of the infamous spice boys. The worrying thing about this is this has been mentioned a few times over recent weeks.

On the Jardel story, I would take him, his record is good, and he would be quite cheap, and I think he would be eligible for CL (I stand corrected if I'm wrong)

Is Carlos Q's influence a factor here? Hope his knowledge of the Portugese language & culture with its strong link to Brasil will bear fruit for us from now on!

the source isnt very reliable though, the News Of The World has linked us to so many people i dont even take notice of them now, they still say we're after David James

United linked to Brazilian trio
First Published: Nov 03, 2002

Manchester United have been linked to a trio of Brazilian stars, including England's World Cup nemesis Ronaldinho and former European golden boot winner Mario Jardel.

United boss Alex Ferguson has been given a green light to sign a new striker once the transfer window reopens on January 1.

And according to Sunday's News of the World, Jardel could be on his way to Old Trafford after falling out with his current club Sporting Lisbon.

"There has been interest from Italy and Spain, but Manchester are in front," Sporting boss Laszlo Boloni was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

Jardel, 28, was Europe's top scorer last year with 42 goals from 34 games.

But he has been sidelined this season after telling the club he was too depressed to stay in Portugal following the break-up of his marriage.

The Mail on Sunday claimed Ferguson has set his sights on Ronaldinho and that the Brazilian's French club Paris Saint-Germain had already been sounded out on a transfer fee that would be likely to top 40 million dollars.

Ronaldinho, who was instrumental in Brazil's World Cup triumph in the summer, is currently enjoying his best season yet at PSG, scoring twice in the 3-0 humbling of Marseille last weekend.

But his relations with coach Luis Fernandez have been strained at times and he could be tempted by a move to a bigger club.

The third Brazilian reportedly targetted by United is 20-year-old Sao Paulo striker Kaka, who was a member of the World Cup squad.

News of United's interest in him came from the Manchester Evening News, which is generally well informed about Ferguson's plans.

The United manager has said he would consider signing a striker who has already played in the Champions League this season, even though this would mean they could only play in domestic games.

The Brazilian trio however are all available for Champions League duty, making them more attractive options.

Another potential target identified by the British media is Argentinian teenager Fernando Cavenaghi.

The River Plate 19-year-old is earning a reputation as the kind of finisher Ferguson needs as a regular partner for Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Ferguson is an avid admirer of the technique of Latin American players and has been a stern defender of Argentina's Juan Veron and Uruguayan Diego Forlan, despite their problems adapting to English football.

He could struggle to get a work permit becuase of his lack of international apperances.
Remember boro had to go to an appeal for Juninhio and he had just played every game for Brazil in the World Cup, so i think it may be unlikely

Sporting Lisbon GM Laszlo Boloni has revealed that Manchester United are favourites to sign striker Mario Jardel.
One of the most feared hit-men on the continent, Jardel almost joined Barcelona over the summer and has also been linked with Real Madrid and AS Roma.

The Brazilian chose to stand out of football at the start of the season citing emotional stress after a messy divorce.

Boloni said yesterday: "Jardel has always attracted offers from Europe, but the favorites at this moment to sign him are Manchester United."

Crucially, Jardel is not Cup-tied to the Champions League and his power in the air would act as the perfect foil for Ruud van Nistelrooy in United's attack

I think he's talking about Kaka. I'd guess Jardel has Portuguese nationality by now.

I find it interesting all this supposed interest in Jardel right when he's struggling at the moment. When he was the best scorer in Europe, nobody wanted him. Now, all of a sudden he's a hot property! Go figure!

I wouldnt mind Jardel, he seems somewhat unstable but you cant question his record, the guy just doesnt stop scoring wherever he goes.

Planetfootball quotes Jardel's agent saying we are interested.

So we're probably not.

A fecking class stiker like Rudd in Jardel, cover for the missing Butt and Keano in midfield, cover for the full back in Burdisso and the ultimate locksmith forwar and cover for Beck in Kaka. But one can only but dream............ :(

That would be a bit of a problem in the non-EU department. Especially with Seba and Fortune already around

I don't think we need a cover for Keane and Butt. We are unlucky with both of them out at the same time, but when they are back their 'cover' will never get a sniff.

Stewart would probably be the natural choise but it seems like he isn't even fit himself!

Jardel could be the one that meets up the Beckham crosses. It's his speciality to score on headers. That's what we need for success this season. But...is he still as good as he was? What about Henrik Larsson instead?

Burdisso: Holds Italian passport

Klebserson: Portugesse

Kaka: German

Jardel: Portugesse.

Therefore I reaLLY THINK SNATCHING THESE LADS COULD BE A DREAM. bUT IF wISHES WHERE HORSES BEGGARS WOULD RIDE

Jardel is in the process of "becoming" Portuguese but he certainly isn't yet.

So Kemo, are you making it all up again we wonder?

He is good in the air and could be a potential target man. It always amazes me that Ruud is better in the air, he's certainly tall enough. But hey you can have everything

Jardel

Proven goalscorer in minor leagues, never scores when called up by Brazil. He doesn't want to stay in Portugal anymore as it "reminds him of his wife".

Verdict: Unstable. Could be useful as a target man to partner Ruud, not cup-tied. Ooops! We only play with one striker.

Ronaldinho

Exciting, irreverent, takes on defenders. Tears defences apart with defence-splitting passes or alternatively dribbles past them.

Verdict: We need this. Buy him. At 25m he is worth every penny. We don't create chances, he does, perfect match.

Kaka

NOT a striker, winger or whatever you want to make up. Will take time to adapt.

Verdict: I f we are feeling a bit rich we can secure him for the future but not really a mid-season reinforcement.

Cavenaghi

Article is spot on about his qualities for partnering RVN. Hasn't been playing much for River but when called upon has scored. Might be a bit uneasy about being benched (at River, after they signed Fuertes, yep the one with passport issues from a couple of years back) so there could be some truth in the story.

Probably the one who would adapt the quickest as we want him to score goals and that's his business. Forlan and Veron have suffered from a lot more than "cultural" adaptation, this guy wouldn't.

Unfortunately, I doubt we are going to get enough kitty. Ronaldinho alone would have me over the moon. It will probably be Jardel though.

Cavenaghi is class for such a young man imo. Ronaldinho should be the priority though, more so than Cisse, as if we arent creating chances what good is a prolific goalscorer?

Ronaldinho would be ideal.

Another guy who has caught my attention lately is Darko Kovacevic. Yeah, I know he wasn't too hot at Sheffield Wednesday(?) but he's currently the leading scorer in La Liga and has been a success in Spain and Italy since he left England. He's a physical presence up front too, as well scoring goals. No idea of his current age, or whether Real Sociedad have played in Europe this seaosn.

Exactly, that has been my point all along. I don't care having 3, 4 or 20 strikers when they won't get the opportunity to score anyway.
