Marcus Rashford (out)

When those players were sold, we had Sir Alex and a team full of winners, our performances never dipped as a result.

If the team had been in 8th after selling beckham, there would have been the same cries.

There is a lot of revisionism going on here, when he hit that 30 goal season, he wasn't just part of the team. Without his goals we'd have finished in the bottom half of the table. The idea you could, or should, sell your only reliable attacking threat at that point is just laughable. And that is what he was at the end of that season. IN fact, we have still never replaced his goals, despite spending around 200 million on attackers in antony, rasmus and zirkzee.
2022 poll: 85% sell

Ok, that % will have changed during 2022/2023 but not by that much as most people aren't knee-jerk reactionists, despite how it appears on here.

Good signing as a backup player. I would have no problem if we got Robben as Ronaldo's replacement, with Valencia as a solid backup.

Having Valencia as a sole replacement, is a clear downgrade. And we lost the league to Chelsea immediately right in that next season, after 3 consecutive years of winning it. Tells us all we need to know.
Nonsense

Valencia was player of the year in his first season, he was a beast.

Besides, realistically who are you going to replace Ronaldo with?
I think we can all agree that we could have added way more quality then Valencia, Michael Owen, obertan and the amazing Mame the legend Diouf

Is there no chance that Arsenal would take Rashford? Looks like they’re desperate for an attacker and I could see him doing well there.

It just irks me that Valencia still gets disrespect from the United fans. Yes he was bought that same summer as the others but unlike the others he hit the ground running. He was a brilliant signing.

Completely agree. Nobody could replace Ronaldo he was simply unstoppable and a once in a lifetime player.

Valencia was superb in different ways. What we would give to have a prime Valencia available to play one of the wing back positions now.

Valencia landed the ball onto Rooney's head countless times in that first season. He did the job he was brought in to do.

We could have asked Madrid for Robben to sweeten things up.
We also got Owen as a striker option in the same summer that Benzema and Huntelaar were moving.
We didn't get a midfielder in that same summer although Wesley Sneijder and Kaka were both moving.

That 2009 summer was a cursed and embarrassing one for us.

Yeah that's where the transfer problems started, replacing Ronaldo one of the best in the world with Owen, Valencia and Obertan FFS

I think if he goes to Barcelona I can see him doing well there... for a while. He'll be in full head-pointing point-to-prove mode and he'll probably have a purple patch. Would be amazed if it lasts more than a few months though.

Wish he'd just take a pay cut and feck off, same with Case it's not like they are on small wages that taking a pay cut will financially hurt them

If you claim to want to get back in the England squad put your money where your mouth is and go to somewhere like West Ham if the interest is true and work your way back to playing for England. Probably arrogance too and sees Barca as the only "worthy" destination

I hope he isn't allowed to just walk back into the squad if we can't get rid, it'll be even more annoying seeing him and Case still strolling about when we've been forced to sell Garnacho

If the powers that be have any sense we won't be seeing ridiculous wages like theirs again

And then his PR team will point to that as us being wrong for kicking him out. Then the real Rashford will come back. Like clockwork.

I'm willing to take the risk and be left with 'egg on our face'. I highly doubt that would happen, as Rashford would struggle to start and I seriously believe Rashford is done as a serious footballer.

We're stuck with him. Banish him to the reserves until the summer, then he and his entourage will get the message clear enough.

We would love him in this squad.

His unprofessionalism and stubbornness is really frustrating. He knows he is not wanted and would rather sit around than try to get back in the team.

Just long enough to fool a top team into a transfer is all we need.
You can do it, Marcus...for 6 months.

Only needs to last a few months as that’ll firmly put him in the shop window and provide us with a decent fee and him off our books for good

Anyone would have been a downgrade to the best player in the world at that moment. But Valencia was miles away from a clear downgrade. You can even say he was better in some areas than Ronaldo (including unlocking Rooney's best goalscoring seasons). He was basically the best RW in the world for 2 seasons consecutively after signing for us. We replaced Ronaldo really well (if we're talking RW for RW). But of course outside of Valencia, the other signings were underwhelming. Now if we got either Robben or Sneijder alongside him, it would have been a different story. We were quite stingy even after selling Ronaldo, always opting for cheaper players with potential. So regardless of Valencia, the club had already moved to that direction.

I’m assuming him taking a pay cut from Barcelona, he expects us to make up the difference to ensure he maintains his wages in full.

We lost the league by 1 point. If we scored one more goal against Birmingham away we'd have won, does that change the Valencia calculus? We also won the league immediately thereafter.

Probably our last 'who the feck is this guy' signing that turned out fantastically
Nope - anyone who watched the PL knew who Valencia was, he was a well known good player who turned out to be better than we all thought he was

We should be able to sell one of Ed Woodward's houses to pay it off. Mental contract.

Having Robben as a sole replacement would have been a downgrade and Valencia would never have signed for us to be a back up, also bear in mind, Robben fecked us over once, I doubt SAF would have entertained him as a Ronaldo replacement

20 mins and the barca fans will boo him, by the end of the month, they will escort him out of the stadium. Rashford would never find a forgiving crowd as those in OT.

Good on him if he willing to take a pay cut to join a team. A change of scenery is must for Rashy at this stage. I hope this happens and he is a huge hit at Barcelona, allowing him to resurrect his career and us to sell him in the summer & use that to fund our incoming transfers.
