Former Everton, Ipswich Town and Sheffield United striker Marcus Bent moves to Indonesia!

Nov 1, 2011 by Gav

Former Ipswich Town, Sheffield United, Everton and England striker Marcus Bent is set to become the second former national team player to play in Indonesia in the past twelve months. Bent, who has been without a club since being released by Birmingham City in the summer, is set to move to Indonesian Liga Prima side Mitra Kukar, with the league season about to get underway.

Bent, now 33, has played for a string of clubs over the years, as well as representing England at Under 21 level in 1998. In recent weeks there have been rumours of a move to League Two side AFC Wimbledon, while there was also interest from an unnamed Danish club, who have been looking to bolster their forwards ranks. However it seems the Hammersmith-born striker has decided to give things a go in South-East Asia.

Mitra Kukar, who are based in East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo, are managed by former Phillippines national team manager and rosbif, Simon McMenemy. Although the signing of Bent is seen as a real coup for the club (and the league), Mitra Kukar also had former Cameroonian international Pierre Njanka on their books last season. The club are said to be on the look-out for more quality signings, although they will not be overseas players, as the club already have their full quota in the squad.

Bent was preceded in Indonesia by former Aston Villa and Stoke City midfielder Lee Hendrie, who had a brief spell in the breakaway national league earlier this year. We reported on Hendrie’s spell in the country here.

Bent will make his debut for the club in the pre-season Inter-Island Cup competition, which begins next week. League action will begin soon after. It makes an unusual – if very praise-worthy – move for the striker, whose previous clubs include Ipswich Town, Brentford, Charlton Athletic and Blackburn Rovers. We wish him – and Simon – all the best for the new season.

He will be making his pre-season debut with them. Here's my bastardised translation of Indonesian:

Marcus Bent to make his debut in the Inter Island Cup

TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA - Mitra Kukar do not want to stop [?] buying star players. After landing Marcus Bent from English club Sheffield United, Naga Mekes [English: The Mekes Dragon] want to add one more star player.

However [?], this time, Mitra Kukar will be looking for a local star. "The foreign quota has already been used up. Because of this, the next [?] star player will be a local one", said chairman Endri Erawan.

"By coincidence [?], as of now we have 24 players. There is still one slot remaining for a player," continued [?] Endra.

Meanwhile, Bent plays [?] as the other Naga Mekes star player Lee Song Min who will be [?] participating in the Indonesian Super League (ISL) 2011-12, preceded by [?] the near-future Inter Island Cup 2011 (7/11). However, as hari-H [?*] approaches, that plan is under threat.

"Three players were brought in to the senior Indonesian squad. Two more [?] are in the Under-23s. Several more are injured. In total, there are only 14 fit players. In addition, coach Simon McMenemy is currently in the Philippines. He has been there [living?] for a month. It is impossible to compete with a team in this condition," said Endri, when contacted Tuesday (1/11/2011).

*No idea what this means... hari is "day"... Transfer window deadline day perhaps

Crazy move, as if he couldn't get a contract for another club in Europe/England.

hari H could be roughly translated to D-day, or deadline day. I'm abit surprised by this, because there's very little news about it here. very different wit when Hendrie was signed, more publication on that one.

Agree. Caught me by surprise as well as there is little publication about this one.
Mitra Kukar surely have done well to kept this under radar.

Nevermind tho, I am surprised with this decision as Indonesia league has just been reshaped defo stability might not in store here, pretty much as what happened with Lee Hendrie before.
