Marcos a target for Manchester United

Manchester United have held preliminary negotiations about bringing Brazil's World Cup goalkeeper Marcos to Old Trafford, indicating that Sir Alex Ferguson has serious reservations about Fabien Barthez.
Marcos, 29 later this month, is available for £3m from Palmeiras and United have held detailed talks with his representatives

Sounds like typical attempt to undermine Barthez.

This came up a few weeks ago and everybody laughed at it. Marcos is nowhere near good enough to play for us. Sure he's the Brazilian goaly but ffs he's not a top class keeper.

I don't believe this story. I think Bernard Lama is the only keeper in the world who has not been linked with us...The British press hates Barthez, because he refuses to speak to them. So they're always happy to write things like that. They don't even mention his injury...I think Fergie is searching for a good cover, an experienced keeper like Van Der Gouw. Even if he wanted to sideline Fabien, he has the excellent Roy Carroll...I don't see the United board splashing so much money for a keeper, particularly when we're not even assured to play the Champion's league...As we have seen yesterday, the problem is elsewhere.

Maybe we're in negotiations to sign him, as cover?

How much chance did we give Taibi. He's not done a bad job since.

Why do we accept mistakes/poor performances, and make excuses for some players, and not others.

Taibi showed what he was capable of in the Liverpool game where he was man of the match. And he's shown what he's capable of since, tho I admit I've not seen much about him for some months now.

Actually, to play the Devil's Advocate, what was terribly wrong with Taibi?

Hey! He was given only 4 games before he was slaughtered.

Look at the circumstances in which he came in - a last minute signing just before the European dead-line, he was rushed into immediate action in, of all high pressure games to debut, a match against Liverpool!

Given no time to settle, feel his way around, get aclimatised, he emerged from that game as Man Of The Match - at Anfield!

He played in 3 other matches, conceding a total of 11 goals in all, but hey, we still collected 5 points from those 4 games, & even Schmeichel has gone thru such phases, ( & our dear Bathez has c*cked up in far bigger stages!! ) but not forgetting that Taibi wasn't even given a settling period, & seeing he was a foreigner coming from a completely different background & culture.

Within slightly over a month, his career in OT was over!

If he was that bad, why did United pay to Venezia a then record fee for a keeper of 4.5 million pounds?

Surely they must have seen something in him, which was obvious as he was getting rave reviews for his performances for Venezia.

To not even give him a second chance or even a spot with the reserves is very puzzling indeed - just imagine, from record-signing to zero in a month!

Taibi has however managed to recover from his bizzare treatment from Fergie & gone on to perform admirably for his subsequent clubs Reginna & Atalanta, & being named keeper of the week on numerous occasions for both clubs to justify that United was not wrong afterall when they decided to make him the most expensive keeper in football!

He's also cost us a goal in that same Liverpool match...

Taibi is a good keeper, but he also failed to hack it at Milan. Just not a top-club sort of player.

I've heard good reports about him since he left us.

And he cost us a goal? SO???? He isn't the only keeper to do that.

Sounds to me like he wouldn't settle here anyway.

And I've heard he is still looking for that ball Le-Tissie shot at him.

If this Marcos bloke makes it to OT, I just hope that the cultural introduction will be made in the reserves team ;)

Cute remarks on Taibi, guys! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

But seriously, to pay a then record 4.5 million pounds & then drop him after 4 games...United must have seen something in him!

Remember even Schmeichel has gone through bad patches - in '96, he conceded 5 goals against Newcastle, followed by 6 against Southampton at OT, & then 1 & 2 more in a 4 match losing streak -a whopping 14 goals! :o

And dear old Barthez conceded 3 goals in each of the Liverpool, Deportivo, Arsenal & Chelsea matches in a matter of weeks! :o :o

And Davo, Fergie's pride will not see Taibi at OT again, & neither wud he want to come! ;)
