I haven't seen a thread on him so thought i'd start one. Been linked to Chelsea but Moyes has been a known admirer... I thought the Three of him Strootman and Maher was a solid unit. Compared to Strootman he seems more dynamic however doesn't have Strootman's leadership skills and properly less composed.

Wonder how you guys rate him.

Has been more impressive than Strootman for me. Or at least more defensive anyway, which is seemingly what people want.

Yes. And a promising one supposedly.

Where would he fit? is he the kind that can replace Carrick or is he the kind that needs a Carrick next to him if that makes any sense? I want us to sign Thiago to slot next to Carrick but I also want us to sign a young midfielder that can rest Carrick and eventually replace him.

He looks like a real box-to-box midfielder, whereas Strootman tends to play as a holding midfielder for the U21's. I'd probably say that Van Ginkel has the higher potential, but he plays in a position where we have Cleverley and Anderson, whereas Strootman could replace Carrick. Nevertheless, I think he'd be a good signing.

He looks a really good player. I hadn't seen him play before this tournament but I have to say he has definitely impressed me.

Based on the Euros he seems like a promising young player but it seems as though Chelsea have him all but wrapped up. Jose apparently spoke with him just before the tournament.

Played in the U21 tournament this week. Watched him against Russia and last night against Italy, didn't see him against Spain. Seemed decent but apart from those 2 games don't know anything about him.

Watched a couple of Holland U-21 games, but haven't seen him before. Him and Strootman played very well together as a CM unit. Covered each other well when one was supporting the front line. Of the two, I thought Van Ginkel had a better tournament and looked far more creative.

He is definitely the more creative of the two but Strootman's role was far more restrictive.

Younger but more impressive than Strootman I agree. Van Ginkel has shown everything for the dutch this tournament, from putting his foot in to help win the ball, to making great supporting runs to help the front players. He's made some nice passes now and again and had some very nice shots. Seems a lot more in the mould of a player to compliment Carrick and improve on Cleverley and Anderson.

Some extra stuff from whoscored, as they picked him out as statistically one of the 4 most impressive players so far at the championships alongside Isco, Eikrem and Bitton

"Marco van Ginkel (Netherlands)

20 year old midfielder Marco van Ginkel's performances for Vitesse this season were enough to draw admiring glances from both Ajax and Chelsea, though the former have conceded that they are unable to compete with the Blues' spending power. It seems more an more likely that he will end up at Stamford Bridge this summer, and he's certainly showed what he can do in Israel so far, helping the Netherlands progress out of an incredibly tough Group B.

The youngster can fit the box-to-box role under Mourinho, having scored 8 goals in Eredivisie this season, and he's shown in the tournament that his defensive ability is certainly up to scratch. The 6'1" midfielder has won an impressive 7 out of 9 aerial duels thus far (78%), as well as averaging 2 tackles per game. He can pick a pass too, completing an average of one accurate through ball, and picking up an assist from 1.5 key passes per game, having attempted 63.5 a match on average. In turn, he's earned an impressive WhoScored rating of 7.72."

Varane was a stand out though. It will be interesting to see where Mourinho takes the squad from here, as he has some quality young players to work with - and a few of them are already entrenched in the first XI, so he may be willing to usher in the next generation if all this talk of feeling at home/long haul stuff is true.

I like this chap.

2 footed, decent finish on him, not afraid to take a pop from range, energy and a decent tackle on him.

Proper box to box with great range of passing too.

More mobile than Strootman IMO

Driving central midfielder, yeah?

How does he possibly get in their team then? Especially with Essien back from loan and Mourinho being well gay for him.

He's only 20 so will probably be loaned out to a decent team like De Bruyne and Courtois after they moved there. Then he will either be given a chance in the first team or shipped out (Mikel is nearly gone, Lampard will retire soon and Essien is probably also finished, surely there will be open slot in their midfield soon).

Their midfield isn't great. Essien isn't even half the player he once was.

He's a midfielder - we were never interested unless we could convert him into a winger or maybe a striker.

Damn, I wish him a speedy and full recovery.

Out of interest duffer, what was the plan of attack with this guy? Was he expected to feature much in the first XI this season?

It's hard to tell really. I personally think he was bought as back up with a view to him being first choice in a year or two's time, unless he played exceptionally well this season and nailed down a starting spot. He really has got injured too early to tell what Mourinho's exact plans for him this season were.

Awful news for Van Ginkel. Was really interested to see him after he impressed me for his under 21 national side. Think it'll be a bit of a blow for Chelsea too as I expected to kick on once he settled this season
