SIR ALEX FERGUSON has asked Juventus boss Marcello Lippi to quit Italy and join him at Manchester United, writes ROB BEASLEY.
And Lippi does not rule out the move, saying: "Sir Alex (right) and I have had a great relationship for years. He always tells me I should come and join him at United.
"He's half serious but going to English football is something I have always wanted to do."
The Juventus chief, one of the most respected coaches in Europe, says it won't happen for a least a couple of years but admits he has always wanted to work in England.
Lippi revealed the shock news in a chat show on Italian TV on Friday.
He said: "Sir Alex and I speak on the phone. We talk about football and other things. I think we are on the same wavelength.
"He is a great manager, a great person and a great friend. The move wouldn't be right now. I'm planning on staying at Juventus for another two or three years. But after that who knows?
"I have said before that after I leave Juventus, I don't think I will manage in Italy ever again."
Lippi's timing could be perfect. Ferguson has just signed on for three more years in charge of the Reds after scrapping retirement plans so the Italian would be available at just the right time to take over.
