How can some of you immediately promote Howard as first choice keeper when till last month, hardly anyone knew of him, he's never played 1st class football & not even 1st or 2nd choice keeper for the US?
My 1st team squad, for all its worth :
Rustu or Barthez if he stays, Carroll, Ricardo.
Gary, Wes, Rio, Tweety, O'Shea, Phil, Lucio.
Becks, Kewell/Ronaldinho, Veron, Fortune, Keano, Scholes, Giggs, Butt, Fletcher.
Ole, Forlan, Ruud.
Signings :
If Barthez really goes, then
Rustu for me - very experienced & 2nd best keeper in the 2002 WC following a very good 2000 EC, big & strong( 6ft 2in, 76kg ), commanding, great shot-stopper & comes free & wouldn't demand the highest salary. Very good age for a keeper at 30, with I reckon, at least 6 good years left in him.
Lucio - big & strong( 6ft 2in, 80kg ), great header of the ball, great at set pieces, very fast, great attacking flair, versatile ( can play CB or full-back equally comfortably), still young ( just turned 25 years old ) but already experienced at the very highest level, being a WC winner & UEFA Champions runners-up already!
Should be prepared to leave Bayer which just missed relegation & with no prospect of European football - appx £10 mil should suffice to tempt Bayer & lure him over.
Kewell or Ronaldinho - both very exciting with superb skills yet big & strong enough to take care of themselves, both with ability to turn a game & potential match-winners, both versatile enough to play alternatively as 2nd striker, both decent scorers, both young but with decent experience ( Kewell at 25, with UEFA Champions football behind him & Ronaldinho at 23, being a WC winner )
Kewell should be the cheaper alternative at £8 mil with Ronaldinho probably at £15 mil.
Total summer expenses will be £25 mil tops with 3 players coming in to add to the squad rather than be mere squad players to be hopefully groomed.
We can leave the grooming to the home-grown players - which we can build on seeing how they've just won the Youth Cup, the first time since '95 I believe - when we buy, it must be ready made, experienced class players - we can't afford to give excuses of not being experienced enough - there's enough experienced talent out there & with the slumped transfer market & with the vast funds available at OT, Utd cannot give the excuse we've been priced out of the market anymore!
