Manuel Almunia retires due to heart condition

Best of luck to him

I was a little shocked to find out hes 37, expected him to be younger.

Still its good they caught it and he didnt go on without knowing

I don't think it will be anything serious for a normal life. They would have probably asked him to take precautionary measure by not doing training which can get intensive sometimes. Good luck to him anyway.

Good that they found the issue before anything happened - retirement sounds like the sensible decision, and I wish him all the best.

Worrying, how stringent were his medicals before this for it not to have been picked up?

Not everybody is born with a heart condition, they can pop up pretty unexpectedly.
He's 37 so it's not like he lost his best years due to a stroke of horrible luck. Regardless, I wish him all the best and a healthy heart!

Whilst glad it was found, how did a player manage a 15 year career, supposedly with stringent testing following the Foe and Puerta deaths, and it remain uncovered?

It happens, I know of players who have been told they can continue their careers after such heart conditions are found.

Are there any details on what heart condition he had? Either way, sad news for him but he's at least enjoyed a long career already. Best wishes to him.

The only sources I could find were a bit Mickey Mouse (Daily Fail being the most reliable one, so got this from Arseblog:

We’re not quite sure what a ‘hypertophic cardiomyopothy’ is, but it doesn’t sound very nice. Indeed Cagliari president,Tommaso Giulini, is quoted as saying it’s the type of problem that without due caution can result in death.

Is there a doctor in the house? @Pogue Mahone

My Dad was diagnosed with HCM, although that diagnosis was later downgraded with 2nd and 3rd opinions. Managed to read quite a bit about it through the ordeal, and if Alumina has it he's definitely a making the right decision.

Sad to hear that. He did have his howlers at Arsenal but I'll always remember his excellent game against Barca (not the 06 final) at the Emirates Stadium. Wish him well and hope he goes on to have a nice, long life.

It's unfortunate, but it's also a blessing in disguise. Best he found out now rather than in the pitch when it's too late. Imagine what ours have happened if he didn't go for a transfer and didn't have a medical!

Best of luck to him after retirement - it's the right decision. There are things more important than football.

Yeah my dad also has HCM which is why I was asking. He actually has a pacemaker & defibrillator installed in his chest which gives you an idea of the potential seriousness of the condition. I actually have to be tested for it every few years because of the potential hereditary nature of the disease.

Another Spaniard with a heart condition...

Sad to hear but at least it was discovered and he can manage it. Wasn't he being tipped for England no.1 at some stage?

Yeah, not like the Arse to overhype average players is it?. For a Prem Lge top club GK he didn't stop very much.

Sad to hear about a player retiring like this but looking on the bright side, he should be thankful that it got detected. Had a good career and probably has enough money to live nicely for the rest of his life.
