Roberto Mancini has declared that midfielder Daniele De Rossi would be 'absolutely perfect' for Manchester City.

De Rossi is under contract with Roma for one more year but the Italian club announced earlier this week they were hopeful of agreeing an extension in the next few days.

Mancini admits there is a good chance the 28-year-old will remain at the Stadio Olimpico but has made no secret of his admiration for the player, saying he would still like to sign another midfielder despite the imminent arrival of Samir Nasri.

"I need something else in midfield because we have limited options," said Mancini in The Sun.

"I have Barry, De Jong, Milner and Toure - but if you consider the number of games in the league, the Champions League and the FA Cup that is not enough.

"Daniele De Rossi would be absolutely perfect for this team and I rate him as one of the best midfielders in the world.

"But I also have the suspicion that he will stay in Rome his entire career, just like Francesco Totti has done."

Gareth Barry, meanwhile, has hailed Nasri as a 'fantastic player' whose arrival at Manchester City will help them win trophies.

Nasri is set to complete a move to the Etihad Stadium from Arsenal on Wednesday after a deal was agreed between the clubs and Barry is excited about the quality he will bring to the squad.

Mancini already has a wealth of options available to him but Barry knows they still have to improve if they are to build on last season's FA Cup success and challenge for silverware on a more regular basis.

"It's great. If you are going to win trophies you need fantastic players and he is another of them," Barry said of Nasri.

"Anyone of that quality who comes into our squad is going to help us."

Barry added: "I've not known anything like it before - maybe you could talk about the England squad, where it's full of great players and you find it tough to get your place.

"It's going to be one of those seasons at club level now.

"We just hope we can go far in all competitions.

"We might have to be patient sometimes if you're asked to miss out on certain games. We all realise we're not going to be able to play every game."

Just one more defensive midfielder, then I'll stop, I swear.

It's like he has some sort of bet on. "I can win the title with this defense". Shit, they're going to need some real protection!

Wow... I can't believe that is even possible.

City's squad is above United's now imo. Don't mean they will win the league though...

UEFA wouldn't let this happen, would they!?

It's not even that they're buying loads of defensive midfielders but it just seems really strange to want to buy another 28 year old midfielder after they bought Yaya Toure and Barry at exactly the same age, and now they're both 29 and 30 respectively and will need replacing in the short-medium term, you think they'd want to get some youth in midfield because it's the only place they don't have it.

Why bother? They'll just buy three more when they need replacing...

The manager knows he is treading on thin ice. If he does not deliver this season, he is out. So, he is looking for a fix that could secure his term for two or three years more at an astronomical wage. He needs experienced and established players. Age is no barrier. And since the money is there, why not spend? Its no skin off his nose.

But, did I not hear that the board has clapped down on his purchases? Only loanees.

He'd actually be a good buy for them if you completely ignore the fact that they already have very good players in the exact same position. However if they could get rid of Barry then De Rossi will make sense.

What was that FFP rule for again?

no feck UEFA

This is getting stupid. Come on, people. What exactly do you think UEFA is supposed to do right now?

We only just started the first monitoring period. It will be two years before it is time to make any sanctions.

And even then, they can only bar them from Europe, not stop them from making these transfers to win the league.

They will not get rid of Barry, but rather De Jong/Milner if they had to rid someone. But that would be pointless anyhow since Mancini is after depth judging by that article.

The FFP rules are entering its monitoring stage now, it has little effect on current financial balances right now so there's no point of crying over it.

This has already gone beyond ridiculous. At the end of the day they can only play eleven players.

Don't know much about the FFP rules but they should ban teams from making any signings outside the rules drawn up by it rather than imposing sanctions.

It was never going to be a quick response. Clubs have two years now to break even and if they don't, they're banned from Europe.

UEFA simply doesn't have the authority, nor should it have, to do more than ban them from their own competitions.

Completely agree that the FA ought to be implementing a similar rule system for their competitions as well as it can still ruin the league.

You may say that UEFA is too late with this, but conversely the fact that city still see the need to spend great sums now shows that they are not in fact too late. Seems to me like they made it just in the nick of time.

I don't see any way City can weasel themselves out of this. They'll have two good years and then chance it that UEFA won't go through with it. Will be very interesting to see what happens when they are actually banned from Europe. With the wages they are paying I reckon they will find it difficult to even begin downsizing their expenditure in anything less than a 4-5 year timeframe.

I think the only thing there is to worry about is if City win the champions league and are reigning champions when the time comes for them to be banned. That would be a pressure cooker for UEFA.

I can see why he'd want another midfielder. Toure and De Jong are good, but if one of them is injured then who've they got? Barry? Milner? Neither are good enough to play in there with any regularity.

I reckon Barry and Milner are pretty good back up myself - Barry looked good the other day against Bolton, as if he wants to step up to the challenge. They're good options to have for games like that, those classic tough PL away games...

He'll have a hard time keeping all of De Jong, Toure, Milner, Barry, Nasri and De Rossi happy, I think.
