06/16/2002. Javier Portillo has attracted the attention of Manchester United, according to Marca. A MU representative is said to have spoken to Real Madrid yesterday about the young goal-machine. Merengues officials have indicated many times they would let Portillo go if someone paid the player's buy-out clause, set at €12.5m.

Portillo - 20 year old Javier Portillo started the season in Real Madrid C, but after scoring over 20 goals was promoted to the B team. Drafted into the first team squad for the final Champions League games, and marked his debut scoring at Panathinaikos only minutes after coming on as substitute.

Do you think this link may have come under the influence of Carlos Quieros?

Definitely, im convinced that his arrival will herald the arrival of a couple of latin kings.
It was a stroke of genius by Fergie to draft him in.

He is a quality player, dont know if Quiroz has anything to do with it though. He is highly rated as it is.

Real Madrid are lining up Potillo to be a star player for them soon, the same way Raul is now. Its part of their strategy which is: buy £40m world class stars and combine them with home grown talent (i.e. Raul+Zidane) to create the ultimate squad.

Thats why I doubt we will get him, Portillo is a huge part of that strategy. £8m buy-out sounds good though, it'd be great if we could get him. Perhaps Real dont need him because of Raul and whatever new striker they are getting.

He's a sensation and theres only so many sensations down at Real Madrid. But Marca are probably chatting shite once more. Didnt they say £50m R.Carlos?

all i gotta say is theres no chance in hell we will get him

his buy out is more like 60-70 mil

Queroz seems like a very sound technical coach and possibly our best "signing" of the summer

We'll see if any latin stars will join us following his arrival

This real madrid kid will definitely not be one of them though, if he's that good and is already at real, no way would he want to leave. Nor would Real let him go.

£60-70 million buy out clause!! No chance. Real would not set a buy out clause stupidly high for a 'B' team player.

"Merengues officials have indicated many times they would let Portillo go if someone paid the player's buy-out clause, set at €12.5m."

That paragraph sounds fairly conclusive. Notice it says 'set at' not 'believed to be set at' or anything like that.

Why did Quiroz get mentioned in this? Is Portillo Portugese? I thought he was Spanish.

Anyway, Real are a club who will only keep those who want to wear the shirt. Portillo has expressed alot of interest in playing in England and it doesnt get any bigger than Utd, the player could very well sway things. We'll see, whatever club he plays for, I'll be keeping an eye on this lad.

He could and should be a goos buy. Real ?Madrid an;'t that clever. the year they sold Redondo it did cost them the champions league you know. :)

The guy sounds like he could be the next Raul and even overtake him. Months ago I heard that Real dont want Crespo/Schevchenko anymore and are maybe even looking to unload some of their strikers because of Portillo.

Perhaps Roy or someone else can give us some more information. Those links are all thats on PlanetFootball.

i think you're confusing him with mantorras, from benfica (via angola), who is also a hot property.

This story is everywhere now, so it could be legit.

<a href="http://www.planetfootball.com/article.asp?id=96681&clid=186&cpid=8&Title=United+latest+to+watch+Portillo" target="_blank">http://www.planetfootball.com/article.asp?id=96681&clid=186&cpid=8&Title=United+latest+to+watch+Portillo</a>

It says Barca have made a bid but failed. Man Utd are supposedly willing to meet his buy-out clause which is £9.5 million apparently.

So that £60-70m mentioned earlier was just a guess?

so how does a website know the ins and outs of a madrid youth players contract?

dont make me laugh

trust me he is like a god over there do you really think he would be sold for 9.5mil when they think hes the next raul?

What you asking me for? Why would you know better?

Almost every story I've read has a buy-out clause similar to £10m. I have no reason to believe it, but it suggests that its true, more true than £60-70m. And no matter how much hype the new Raul gets, this is a guy who has only made one full team appearance. £10m is like a fortune for a guy who has only made 1 appearance, considering Greening many quite a few for us.

I believe Real Madrid wont depend on buy-out clauses to keep their players. Either the player wants to stay or they sell, thats how big they are. As far as Real are concerned, even if the buy-out is met, they expect him to reject. If not, then I dont think they'd mind getting rid of him for £9.5m. But that said, they must be pretty confident he wants to stay.

Didnt I just say he would reject it? Portillo is a baby in football terms, thats my point. £10m is as much as this guy can be worth for a B Team player - cos thats what he is, no matter how much hype he gets, he is B team. Yes I have heard of him, didnt you read my earlier posts?

Dont even know what you're talking about, so what if he has £10m buy out clause? SO feckING WHAT??? WHAT YOU HAVING A GO AT ME FOR??

Friggin' idiot.

im not having a go at you mate

and hes not a baby in footballing terms, although he might be to people in england, all i got to say is try and see him in a game and you will see what all the 'hype' is about.

just let you know about the hype, the kid scores an average of 100 goals a season

and again im not having a go i think your a good poster even though i dont agree with some stuff ie giggs
;)

Aww shucks, I was just being dramatic anyways.

I know he is well known and a great prospect, but you cant place a huge valuation on a young guy like that. Placing £60m on him would mean he is better than Zidane/Ronaldo etc, which he is not, yet. Not to mention the pressure - he is still just a prospect, he is not yet world class in terms of the market. These writers have their sources and thats my only indication, I assume its not a coincidence they're all similar values.

I hear he's hit close to 800/900 goals in 7 seasons so I've heard just how good this guy is as well as Real's plans for him i.e giving up on Shevchenko and Crespo just because of him. So I know its unlikely we get him sadly.

My Giggs issue is just disappointment at my once fave player not living up to his genius. Watching videos of him from years ago just makes it worse - he used to be so much better. He should be winning world players of the years or at least competing etc.
