Manchester United FC will sign Damien Duff within a week, and Dwight Yorke is moving the other way, the Sun stated.
Alex Ferguson plans to give striker Yorke plus J6 million to land Blackburn's Republic of Ireland wideman.
The negotiations to complete the deal are already at an advanced phase, as United aim to beat Leeds United AFC and Liverpool for the player's signature.
The move is a sure sign Fergie is already bidding to rebuild his side for next term.
The Old Trafford chief sees the 23-year-old Duff as Ruud van Nistelrooy's new partner up front, although the Rovers star has also won rave reviews for his versatility.
He is at home on the left wing - his position at Ewood Park. But he will partner Leeds ace Robbie Keane up front for the Irish in this summer's World Cup.
He can also play off the main frontman to great effect.
Rovers boss Graeme Souness has made no secret of his desire to reunite Trinidad and Tobago international Yorke, 30, with his former Old Trafford strike partner Andy Cole. But Souey is also resigned to losing Duff after talks aimed at handing him a new, four-year contract broke down.
Meanwhile, United bigwigs insist Juan Veron will not be leaving Old Trafford.
Chief executive Peter Kenyon claims there is a campaign to try to force the Argentine playmaker into quitting the club.
And he is angry at reports of an alleged dressing-room bust-up between the J28.1 million star and his teammates following last Tuesday's European Cup semi-final exit against German side Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
S. S. Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti added to the uncertainty surrounding the midfielder's future by saying the Italians would like to take him back to Rome.
That view was echoed by new Lazio coach Roberto Mancini, who replaced axed Alberto Zaccheroni at the helm yesterday.
Kenyon insists Veron is content to stay at United.
The Old Trafford supremo said: "You have to believe there are concerted efforts by people outside of United to unsettle Juan Veron - and it is unsettling. Nobody needs that.
"Seba is a world-class player. He has demonstrated that to us on occasions.
"I have no doubt he will be one of the main players coming out of the World Cup. He is absolute quality.
"What is undermining is the continual focus on him wanting to go and not being happy.
"Nothing could be further from the truth. We want to squash all that once and for all. It is not doing any good to anybody. Seba's had reassurances from everybody that this is not a Manchester United issue and that this is starting somewhere else.
"We have - and will continue - to reassure him about his future here from a club point of view.
"There is nothing to indicate Juan Veron won't be a Manchester United player next season - either from the club or from the player."
