Manchester United to Tour US with ChampionsWorld in Summer of 2003
THE REDS ARE COMING!
Manchester United are coming to America in 2003 as part of a summer tour that will bring the excitement of the world’s most popular club to soccer fans across the US.
The famous Red Devils will be visiting in July/August next year during a 16-day pre-season trip that will see some of the sport’s biggest stars – among them Roy Keane of Ireland, David Beckham of England and Juan Sebastian Veron of Argentina – playing for United against top-flight opposition in three cities.
ChampionsWorld LLC, the international sports marketing company headquartered in New Jersey, is organising the tour and has lined up an itinerary that stretches from coast to coast. United will open the trip in Seatte on July 23rd, then fly to play in Los Angeles on July 27th and Boston on July 30th, before completing the tour with a visit to New York/New Jersey on August 3rd.
The opposition for United’s four games has not yet been finalised, but one thing is certain: the action on the pitch will be highly competitive. United’s legendary coach, Sir Alex Ferguson, will take his entire first team squad to the States for games which will be used as a key part of United’s preparation for the start of the new English Premier League season in August.
Commenting on the news of the tour, Sir Alex said: “We are all greatly looking forward to the trip. Everyone knows that football is becoming increasingly popular in the States, and by coming over on tour with United we hope to bring the game to an even wider audience, winning new fans and friends in the process. I am sure the team will enjoy the experience of playing in front of large and enthusiastic crowds in some of the best stadiums in America.”
Peter Kenyon, Chief Executive of Manchester United, said: “Everyone at the club is excited about going to the States next year. The trip will not only give soccer fans in the US the chance to see some of the world’s finest players in the flesh, but we believe our visit can help promote not only Manchester United but the sport itself. Soccer is increasingly popular among Americans, especially youngsters, and we hope that our tour of the States will generate even more excitement about the beautiful game.”
Charlie Stillitano, Chief Executive of ChampionsWorld, said: “We are delighted and honoured to be acting as the exclusive promoters of Manchester United’s US tour in 2003. They are one of the greatest teams in soccer, and fans across the country are in for a real treat. It is not often that superstars like David Beckham and Ryan Giggs get to play in America, so it is going to be a very special trip.”
