Manchester United Reserves 1-0 West Bromwich Albion Reserves
Manchester United's reserves started their league campaign with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford, Daniel Nardiello sealing the victory with a fine strike from the edge of the box.
The Premier Reserve League match proved to be just as frustrating as the first team fixture that was played against the same club on the same pitch just four days earlier. There were echoes of the Premiership opener in that United had most of the possession but struggled to break down a stubborn Albion defence.
Mike Phelan's young Reds team had shown promise early on but as the game wore on the strength of the visiting team stifled much of United's play.
Darren Fletcher in particular seemed to be at the centre of every United move in the opening exchanges. The young Scot strikes a confident and composed figure in the centre of the park.
The Reds created plenty of chances during the first half, the energetic Luke Chadwick putting Matty Williams through after ten minutes but the angle was too tight for the 19-year-old and the Albion goalkeeper saved comfortably.
There were appeals for a penalty as Nardiello went down in the box after 23 minutes, but the referee waved away the protests.
After half an hour's play Fletcher orchestrated a move for himself, turning sharply to fire in a shot from 30 yards, but unfortunately his strike was always rising.
West Brom weren't without chances of their own. Des Lyttle went close for the Baggies early on, his header going just wide of the post, although Luke Steele had it covered. Kyle Patterson then broke away down the left but the impressive Steele palmed the shot away for a corner.
The second half proved just as infuriating as the first as the Reds burst forward with Danny Pugh finding space down the left wing to show why pre-season first team opportunities came his way.
Matty Williams also continued his impressive pre-season form with a solid display showing good movement and holding the ball up well. But it was his strike partner Daniel Nardiello who produced the winning goal - a wonderful strike to delight the 884-strong crowd and secure the three points.
Lee Roche picked out Nardiello lurking on the edge of the box and the 19-year-old forward curled an inch-perfect shot into the far corner.
