Stars grace '06 Man United Cup launch

Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Alex Ferguson joined Nike’s David Daley to welcome the rising stars from just twenty teams remaining in a tournament which has involved more than 9,000 teams from five continents over the past twelve months.

The tournament, jointly hosted by Nike and Manchester United will take place at United’s training facilities at Carrington from Tuesday 8 August 2006, with the final match taking place at Old Trafford after the first team’s Open Training session on Friday 11 August.

Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand enjoyed his own experiences in youth tournaments and offered some words of advice to the assembled youngsters.

"I remember as a kid sometimes I got nervous on the big occasions, but the best way to combat this is to try and relax; just think of it as a game you play with your friends.

"This is a great tournament, and to get to this stage you have all done well. If you then get to the final and play in this wonderful stadium it would be a fantastic achievement, so you just need to go out there, enjoy yourselves and do the best you can."

Sir Alex Ferguson spoke of the dedication and sacrifices needed to get to the top while Sir Bobby Charlton, who earned 106 caps and netted a record 49 goals for his country, shared his view on the true meaning of sportsmanship to tumultuous applause.

“Respect each other. You must also respect the referee. You may not always agree with the decisions he makes but he has a very difficult job to do. Don't try and cheat, don't try and dive, if you are going to win please try to do it properly. I think that is very important,” Fergie said.

In the Draw, host team Manchester United headed Group A, to be joined by Hungarian team Ferencvarosi and two previous Premier Cup World Champions, Athletic Club Bilbao from Spain and Brazilian club São Paulo. The group was completed by newcomers Mohun Bagan from India.

Group B opened with Italian giants Inter-Milan and FC Brussels Molenbeek from Belgium, followed by Mexican team Chivas Guadalajara, South African representatives Orlando Pirates and Australia’s Bulleen Lions.

UK Champions Arsenal feature in Group C and will face Hertha BSC from Germany, Chilean club Universidad Catolica, USA’s Ohio Mutiny and Ulsan Hyundai from Korea.

Portugal’s Boavista lead Group D, and Switzerland’s FC Basel, Argentina’s Atletic Club Lanus, Beijing Sanfang from China and Japan’s Tokyo Verdy 1969 concluded the Draw.

Kolkata club Mohun Bagan have been drawn in a tough Group 'A', in the elite Manchester United Premier Cup (Under-15) football championship alongside the hosts and two previous champions -- Athletic Club Bilbao from Spain and Sao Paulo FC of Brazil.

Hungary's Ferencvarosi TC is the fifth club in the group.

The draw for the biggest Under-15 football tournament was released at the world famous 'Theatre of Dreams', where some of the world's top footballers turned up to light up the evening.

Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Alex Ferguson were all present to meet the stars of tomorrow.

The 20 teams have been drawn in five groups, with Italian giants Inter Milan and FC Brussels Molenbeek from Belgium in Group 'B' and Arsenal featuring in Group 'C'.

The teams went through a rigorous qualifying stage involving more than 9,000 teams from five continents over the past 12 months. The Mohun Bagan Under-15 side is one amongst them to survive the qualifying heat and reach the finals of the tournament.

Bagan is one of the five teams from Asia playing in the championship, the others being Bulleen Lions from Australia, Beijing Sanfang FC from China, Tokyo Verdy from Japan and Ulsan Hyundai FC from Korea.

The tournament kicks-off on Tuesday at United's training facilities at Carrington while the final will be played at Old Trafford.

Footballers went down memory lane and remembered their journey to stardom.

"I remember, as a kid sometimes I got nervous on the big occasions, but the best way to combat this is to try and relax; just think of it as a game you play with your friends," said Ferdinand.

"This is a great tournament and to get to this stage you have all done well. If you then get to the final and play in this wonderful stadium it would be a fantastic achievement; so you just need to go out there, enjoy yourselves and do the best you can," he said.

Mohun Bagan lose Manchester opener

August 08, 2006 21:19 IST

Mohun Bagan squandered an early lead and went down 1-4 to their fancied hosts in their first match of the Under-15 Manchester United Premier Cup in Manchester on Tuesday.

The Kolkata colts took the lead through David Lalrinmuana, but their opponents quickly restored parity and the match was locked 1-1 at the end of the first 20 minutes.

The Indians were totally over-run in the second half as Manchester United struck thrice to seal victory.

Mohun Bagan face Sao Paulo FC, Brazil, later on Tuesday night and square off against Ferencvarosi TC (Hungary) and Athletic Club Bilbao (Spain) on Wednesday.

From Mambo in Newbies:

Manchester united premier cup
United under 15s started well against the Hungrian team, with Ajose getting a hat trick and we also scored from a penalty{Oliver, i think he is called) Nick Ajose was really hot in the game and the whole team looked realy good.
Second game againnst the Indian side was also an easy win for the united lads, they looked really confident throughout, not sure of the goal scorers, think Cameron Stewart was one of the scorers this time, A good 1st day they will face the 2 previous premier cup winners from spain and brazil tomorrow and they need at least 1 point to go through :

From amit_onlymanutd in the newbies:
Manchester United u-15 win 4-1 against u-15 Indian side Mohan Bagan.

MANCHESTER, Aug 8: Lalrinmuana's first-minute goal on Tuesday was met with a deathly silence. Slowly, in the far corner of the Carrington ground, Manchester United's training centre, a small group of Indians broke into a wild celebration as Lalrinmuana raced across the pitch, acknowledging the cheers.

For the next three minutes, Mohun Bagan Athletic Club, in their debut game of the Nike sponsored Manchester United Premier Cup, dared and dazzled. Then the strapping Evandro de Carvalho Brando, easily the man of the match for Manchester United's under-15 side, burst the bubble with an opportunistic goal in the fifth minute.

The host team added three more in the second half to power to a 4-1 win. For the rest of the first half of the shortened 20-minutes-a-half match the boys in maroon stood their ground, showing rare spirit and skill, much to Man United's frustration. Then late in the first half when Lalrinmuana limped off the field, leaving his team one short, with three minutes to go for the whistle, Mohun Bagan were firm in defence.

At halftime the score may have read 1-1 but Shyamal Banerjee's boys had won hearts. A freak goal three minutes after the break by Ajose Nicholas opened the floodgates for Man United. Brando struck again in the 30th minute with a solo from midfield.

Four minutes later, Norwood made no mistake with a penalty to add to Bagan's woes. Coach Banerjee put down the difference between the two sides to "the physical aspect." He added, "They are faster, fitter and more powerful. This is the difference between playing at the Asian level and playing at this level."

It was quite unbelievable whan an indian side made it to a world famous tournament.i am happy united won but i hope the mohan bagan u-15 make some real progress in this tournament.

Further updates

I haven't got the team news but apparently we drew 1-1 with AC Bilbao (Ajose scored) and then lost 0-2 to Sao Paolo this afternoon.

My understanding is that we have been eliminated!

Does anyone have more news?
