All eyes on the Premier Cup

The eagerly-anticipated Manchester United Premier Cup World Finals take place in Manchester this week with youngsters dreaming of a career in the game getting the chance to strut their stuff.

The event takes place at Carrington on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with the final itself staged at Old Trafford on Saturday.

20 Under-15 teams from across the globe are taking part and, with 18 years of history to the Premier Cup, they will be following in some famous footsteps including the likes of Barcelona trio Andres Iniesta, Alexis Sanchez and Lionel Messi plus United's da Silva twins.

Boca Juniors, Chelsea, Valencia, PSV Eindhoven and Fenerbahce are just a handful of the prestigious clubs competing this year and we'll be covering the competition throughout on ManUtd.com.

The matches are 20 minutes each-way with the format starting with four groups of five teams.

United's provisional squad: Antoine-Clarke, Borthwick-Jackson, Daly, Fulwood, Harrison, Hart, McTominay, Naylor, O'Hara, Redmond, Riley, Rokka, Shields, Tuanzebe, Watson, Whiteman.

I know this is a long shot, but any names that particularly stand out from this group of talent?
 
Snatched up by Man Utd... at 11 years old

For most 11-year old boys, playing for Manchester United is a far-away fantasy.

But for Axel Tuanzebe, from St John’s RC Primary School, it is a dream which is well within grasp.

The gifted young sportsman has already been signed up by Manchester United, and shares his training ground with the most high-profile Man Utd celebrities.

Having met all the players and been to various training camps, Axel is hoping to one day join his dream team as a full time career.

Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Keith Swift, last week awarded the him with the sports boy of the year award at a school ceremony.

Speaking to Rochdale Online News about his dreams, Axel said: “I met all the players at different training camps.

“I love football and I really want to stay playing for Manchester United until I am old enough to join the main team.”

Chris Hickman, Sports Co-ordinator at St John’s RC Primary School said: “He is one talented lad.

“I’ve been training him since he was in year three and he really has what it takes.”

He added: “There is a contract from Man Utd every year, and the longer he stays in, the more chance he has at making it with the main team.”

“I really think it could happen for him.”

Assume that's Ryan Shields, who made a brief appearance for the U18s at the end of last season.

Vaguely remember hearing promising things about Borthwick-Jackson a year or so ago.

Elliot Rokka:

A YOUNG footballer has proved a real rising star after scoring a spot on the England youth squad aged just 13.

Elliot Rokka, a pupil at North Cestrian Grammar School, Altrincham, has been in Manchester United Football Academy for two years.He was picked by talent scouts for the North West Schools Squad and from there recruited to the England under-17s team.

Scott McTominay:

Scott McTominay has returned from playing for Manchester United Academy in the prestigious Aarau Masters in Switzerland with a special souvenir -- a football signed by stars like Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs. Scott, a pupil at St Wilfrid's, Halton, was given the ball after being named player of the tournament, despite being one of the youngest.

I also read on one of those silly rumour sites that a 15 year old called Luke Daly who apparently plays (or played) for Crewe is interesting Wigan and may cost as much as £500k. I'm wondering whether it's the same player and he has been bought by United from Crewe? He was also a member of the Marveld squad, so it may not even be the same player, but the name and the age is suggestive.

12:15 FT: Utd 0-0 Pachuca The Reds stood firm to withstand some late pressure and could even have nicked a winner themselves when Riley blasted into the side-netting. It was as entertaining a 0-0 draw as you're likely to see, and a vast improvement on this morning's earlier result. Coach Tommy Martin will be pleased with that. (NC)

12:13 The last two minutes has been non-stop Pachuca pressure. Reds goalkeeper O'Hara made a fabulous stop from a close-range header (I'm not sure how much he knew about it but his positioning was spot-on) and then another great reflex stop. Left-back Hart also played his part in helping to keep the score at 0-0. (NC)

12:10 It's still goalless here, although United are now on top and have gone close through both Antoine-Clarke and Riley. Five minutes to play... (NC)

11:56 Pachuca's no.88 has just missed an absolute sitter. Honestly, it was right on the line and he scuffed it back across goal. You have to say, that's a massive lifeline for United. (NC)

11:50 HT: Utd 0-0 Pac No goals in this contest yet, although United came close via Whiteman in the final minute of the first half. The Reds can certainly win this - they look good on the break - but will have to keep concentrating at the back. (NC)

11:44 Bizarrely, Pachuca don't seem to be fielding anybody with a squad number lower than about 80. In my immediate vicinity right now are numbers 81, 93, 98 and 101. Very odd. (NC)

11:37 So far, so good: it's 0-0 after seven minutes and both United and Pachuca have had chances. This looks like it may be a more even contest. (NC)
 
I get the feeling this is not one of our strongest generations of footballers!
 
It's far too early to judge. They had a disappointing Marveld also but as with anything you take a long term view.

The Barmby, Blackett etc team had a disappointing Premier Cup as well but some very good players are emerging from that team.

The generation that formed the core of our Youth Cup winning side last year didn't exactly tear the MUPC (or Marveld) up in 'their day' either if memory serves. Can't base any real judgements on this.

Well I agree that 2 things support your argument

1) United concentrate on skill rather than physical strength in early years - so we are usually outmuscled at young age

2) We start signing players at the age of 16 - so quite a few of our keyplayers in the FA Youth Cup of course didn't play in Marveld (Pogba, Cofie I believe, van Velzen, McGinty, Fornasier to name some)
 
Kershaw said that at this age strength and size makes a difference. United were very small, boys really. Chelsea who did well had about 6 six footers. Pachuca aren't tall but are strong.

United have very good technical players but some haven't grown yet.

Johnstone, the Keanes, Thorpe, Fryers, Cole, Lingard, Tunnicliffe, Morrison all did though - not a bad set of players there and yet they didn't tear up too many trees at the MUPC in 07 or 08. Like your 1st point and datura's post just above suggest, you really can't base any assumptions on the eventual quality of this crop of youngsters on results in these tournaments.

Naturally we produce many good youngsters - but unlike most other teams, we can afford to attract the best players (or at least very good players) - so while we might be on level with most teams at the age of 16 - they might have the same players at 18 - whereas we have added 3-4 quality players where we were weak at 16...
 
Another thing Kershaw said is that it's not really about producing a 'team' it's about the individuals that might make a first team player.

He referred to the Leeds game in the FA Youth Cup where they beat us and but as he said they didn't really have any 'special' players, whereas Scholes, Beckham, Butt, Neville etc all came out of that United youth side to go on to great careers, whereas Tinkler, Whelan, Sharp (who did suffer from injuries) didn't really make much impression at the top level.

He also said that at 14 you have maybe the biggest differential between size then any other age group.

We should campaign to get Kershaw on Twitter, he's very engaging and knowledgeable.
 
Very little shown from United in the program on MUTV. Just about only the goals and nothing from the 2 last games.

Whiteman scored a well taken penalty. He had some nice passes and is also a tall winger, so he looked promising.

Same team.
Only team not to loose against the winners was United in this game.

Game 3 (Hannover 96) 2-0:
Same team, although I didn´t see number 6.
Redmond and Shields scored. Naylor passed to Shields unselfishly for the goal.

Same team

Game 5. () 0-2:

Riley scored the goal and United ended in 12th place.
 
Really hard to say who played best on that program on MUTV. The video was so sketchy that there is no way one can say about how well individuals did. But it seemed that the players were promising but the coach told that haven´t got much tournament experience. But I heard Antoine-Clarke and Watson did very well.
