Man Utd joins Newcastle in Southgate chase

Manchester United have joined Newcastle in their interest in Middlesbrough defender Gareth Southgate.
The 32 year-old England international has admitted he knows of Newcastle's interest and is keen to play Champions League football.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is looking for a new, experienced centre-half with David May and Laurent Blanc having been released and also Wes Brown out with a knee injury.

Newcastle and Manchester United are likely to table offers in the region of £2.5 million for Boro skipper Southgate in the coming weeks.

oh heck tribal football spouts more crap than the sun...and thats BAD.

Cafu is on a free and would be better than Blanc for us. Is still a good athlete and Fergie is a known admirer for awhile now. Cant get much more experienced than Cafu....

Cafu would be ideal, he has experience from the world stage with Brazil and has played in the Champions League with Roma to a less effect. He has tried to get out of his move to Yokohoma with the saars and has been linked with Valencia. He would be a great addition and still has the pace despite being 30-over.

Cafu is a classy right back while Blanc is a central back. Totally different players

no!! you dont say!!!

he can play CB if required. But you should know that we need backup in fullback positions, especially with Brown out.

he is like Blanc in the sense that he is there to be called on when needed yet we are able to rest him.

If we got Lucio/Samuel - these players would demand a starting place every game. Not the way to go, Fergie is looking to build on this young defence, not smash it down.

that say... If they are really good enough, we shouldn't stop getting top players just because we want to build our own crop. I think we have already enough full backs even if Brown is injured (Gazza, O'Shea, Phil, Micky). However, an experienced CB is needed in order to lead the defence.

Thankfully we know that this rumour is total fabrication and nothing could be further from the truth.

Southgate's a good reliable defender one of the aggressive CB's that we are looking for, think he would be a good signing our young lot could learn a lot from him. He's a leader which we seem to lack at the heart of the defence, i thought Rio would take this on but hasn't of yet.

cafu is as much of a central back as RVN is of a goalKeeper

I thought this thread was to discuss Southgate? well he is getting on a tad but I think he could definately do a job for us, us is a good defender and would fit nicely with Rio in Wes's absence. Didnt we already knock Cafu back? great player though IMO.

Quoted from Redcafe news:
United chief executive Peter Kenyon has promised 'exciting' signings during the summer as United look to mount another assault on the Champions League next season.

Big name stars like Ronaldinho, Harry Kewell and Lilian Thuram have been linked with moves to Old Trafford over the past weekend, and Kenyon admitted:

'Any players we bring in here I think our fans will be excited about, because invariably you have to be a big name player to play for Manchester United.

--------------------------------------------

I agree everyone can have his own opinion, though some people's suggestions are really difficult to understand. Are we Manchester United really need to go for players such as David James and Gareth Southgate? Will we really be "excited" with the signing of this kind of average EPL players?

As for another "experienced" defender we are also being linked with Thuram.

Thuram feud gives Fergie hope
Juventus star Lilian Thuram has opened the door to a megabucks move to Manchester United after revealing a huge rift with boss Marcello Lippi. The French international has been a long-standing target of United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who almost signed him last season before opting to splash £30million on Rio Ferdinand. Now, three days before Juve's Champions League final against Milan, Thuram has confessed he does not even speak to his manager. And he even admitted that United - who thrashed Juventus twice in the second group stage this season - are a better side than the Italian champions. He added: "Manchester are a club I love enormously! Make of that what you will. They are a club who have always been at the highest level with fantastic players and Sir Alex is a phenomenal manager."

18 mil? 8 mil should be okay though....

Yeah Thuram has had some weak performances, especailly in the Champions league.I stillhopewe can sign him, unlikely though...

Bring in a Pellegrino, a Paulo Montero, an Ivan Cordoba, an Ayala, or a Walter Samuel. Bring in a defender who loves TO DEFEND and not some defender who loves to look pretty on the ball like our massively overpriced Rio.

Bring in a dirty son of a bitch then no one's going to stop us from winning the Champions League. We've been robbed because of the damned 'away goals rule'. Sometimes I wonder if it was implemented just to stop us from winning the champions league.

It's a fair rule don't you think? If you can't defend well away from home you don't deserve to win the Champions League.

It's more important to defend well at home, I think.
