Any Man Utd Chao fans on the caf? He hasn't got a huge fanbase in the English speaking world but in my opinion, he is one of the greatest artists alive. Talent, intelligence, originality, soul, heart; he's got it all. I saw him live in Bogota last year, where he did a free concert, and he was incredible. I've since bought all of his albums, including one he produced for Amadou and Mariam, a blind couple from Mali, and not one song has disappointed me. Unfortunately, I couldn't get tickets to his gig in Manchester last month but I met some people who went and they said it was amazing; out of 10, they gave it 30.

He sings in Spanish, French, English, Portuguese and on his new album he sings one song in Italian. He has spent time in France, Spain, Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Mali, Senegal and in the mid 90s, he and his old band, Mano Negra, bought an old train and travelled along unused railtracks in rural Colombia performing impromtu gigs to locals (which included the leftist guerrillas fighting in Colombia's civil war) picking up trapeze artists, musicians, magicians and acrobats on the way who helped him put on shows.

His latest project is helping produce and raise awareness for Radio Colifata, a radio station in Buenos Aires run by psychiatric patients. An album is expected in 2008.

I want to get his new album to see if he's as good as they say. I just read an article about him in High Times.:nervous:

Love the Guy!!!!!

"King of The Bongo". Possibly the greatest song of all the time.

Mama was queen of the mambo
Papa was king of the Congo
Deep down in the jungle
I started bangin' my first bongo
Every monkey'd like to be
In my place instead of me
Cause I'm the king of bongo, baby
I'm the king of bongo bong.

Got into my usual Man Utd Chao summer love-in back when it was sunny, which is customary for me around this time of year...He hasn't done anything of great quality for a while, with Clandestino & Esperanza remaining his best albums to date, but there's a couple on Radiolina I like...Including the one about Maradona

The Live album (Radio Bemba) is great fun...

Mike thinks he's gay.

Man Utd Chao is quality - seen his live show a couple of times and wasnt disappointed

Not listened to anything from him for a while so just stuck Radio Bemba Sound System on

Everyone I know whose been has said he's fantastic live, and the Radio Bemba footage seems to back that up...

I'd be going mental if I was in the crowd here when they bring on the trumpets..

As for new stuff, he hasn't really done much. He did a French chanson album (very Frenchy, accordiany type stuff...ish, with his kind of vibe thrown in) ..it wasn't that great.

He's pushing 50 now so my chances of seeing him live are dwindling, but he's a fairly prolific fellow, I'm sure he'll swing by Brixton Academy in the next few years.

I've got the remix as my ring tone at the moment as it happens...The little trumpet riff obviously.

Which oddly has nothing to do with bumping this thread, it's been that for a while. But you just reminded me, I've become almost unresponsively blithe to it now. Which is a sure sign I should probably change it.

Yep - i went to this:
Man Utd Chao, Shepherd's Bush Empire | The Guardian

although i remember a mate of mine leaving halfway though in disgust, a lot of people who liked the chilled out albums were not ready for him to turn up and do a nonstop Mano Negra-athon. Although he bailed way too early and regretted it ever since - as the review says he then sent the band away, decreased the tempo and did a bit of a solo acoustic set - quality stuff!

Yeah I know a few people who know him mainly, or only through Clandestino who were really put off by Radio Bemba's ska-like (as you say) Mano Negra style...My mum being one!...I Loved it personally. Hard to believe Mala Vida was written in the mid 80s in France!
