Man United cooks up cafe deal
MANCHESTER United, the world’s biggest football club, is launching a new chain of concept cafes and restaurants in China and other Asia-Pacific countries.
Singapore luxury goods retailer FJ Benjamin, which already makes and distributes the club's merchandise in the region, will jointly own and run the chain.
FJ Benjamin said there are plans for 100 restaurants and the initial investment by the two partners was £370,000 each. The agreement is for an initial period of ten years with a projected turnover of £900,000 a year.
Peter Kenyon, the chief executive of Man Utd, added the club has negotiated an option to allow it to take an eight per cent stake in the venture.
The first outlets will be opened in Singapore and Beijing before the third quarter of this year, followed by more restaurants in the region next year.
