I hereby start the half arsed campaign calling for Mal Loye to go straight into the England first XI following his call up to the squad as replacement for Vaughan, and to retain his place through to the world cup even when Peiterson / Vaughan likely return.

Seen him a lot for Lancs over the years, he's a top top batsman, complete mystery to me why he hasn't been called up before. Age is against him, but he still has a couple of years on Nixon, and they've had no issues sticking him straight into the first team. He's a hitter and a shot maker, and plays at the top of the order which is the type of player we simply don't have currently. Instead of fending out the 'powerplay' overs, we might actually make a few runs instead.

And if you squint a little, has a slight resemblance to Cantona. Seals the deal...

Apparantly, he was called up in 1998, but told three hours later that Glamorgan's Steve James was playing instead.
Am just hoping he gets his chance. He's our only hope of winning the World cup, along with a fit KP.

Seconded

Well he does start, and I can't bloody watch it because of the weather claiming my TV pictures! I will do my nut in if we finally beat Australia on this tour, and having stayed up to watch all of it I miss it. Have radio coverage until I go to bed. Am slightly sick of waking up in the afternoon so may make that move earlier than has been normal recently

Don't worry, I'm staying up watching it, the storm hasn't claimed my Sky yet!

I can give you updates of how Beefy is stating the obvious is you want?

Haha, please do. Refreshing to hear the BBC commentary actually, though I do think Sky provide excellent coverage. Don't want to jinx him, but what a fine start from Loye! Boy am I gunna call the England selectors a bunch of cnuts if he goes on to make a score...

I tell you what, he's playing some cracking shots! Slog swept Bracken over square leg for 6, you really should catch it on the highlights!

I have to admit I prefer the BBC's commentary, you can't beat Agnew, Boycott and Blofeld in my opinion, although are they doing the one-dayers?

It's a bunch of Aussies at the moment, but they're full of admiration for Loye and rightfully taking the piss out of England for their 'youth selection policy'. 30 off 29 I believe he is now, and already I think he's cemented his place in the side for the rest of the series, and if he posts a couple of big scores, he's a certainty to start. Does piss you off though, why have England not even tried this guy at any point over the last decade?

He was chosen against Sri Lanka in 1998 I think, but got dropped for the mighty Steve James.

I don't think our youth policy is all that bad, there are some very talened young players around. The problem lies in a conservative selection policy - Paul Nixon being the obvious example.

It's all very well saying that you won't pick players like Bopara because they have little experience - that's not going to change unless they play! It's like SAF saying that Rossi won't be picked because he has no first team experience

And as I start to admire the way Loye has played, he fends at one angling across him. Good catch at first slip.

Still, well played for 36 off 36 balls. I must admit it was nice to see English batsmen other than Freddie attacking

It's more understandable if there are players so good they keep you out of the team, but that can hardly be said of the England one day side in the last decade. And even then players need a rest now and again, when you can give a young lad a chance. You can't say 'he's not going to be good enough for that level' if you don't give him the chance.

Alas Loye has now gone, but nothing shoddy about 36 from 36 as an opening batsman, I doubt England have seen that for a very long time. Cracking debut for me despite the lack of a big score.

And its 56-2 with Strauss slightly mistiming a pull and Brad Hodge diving full length and pulling off one of the most ridiculous one-handed catches I have seen. Imagine Strauss's catch at slip in the 2005 Ashes and you will get the idea.

Hmm, now Joyce is in. He with the average of 9.00

If Joyce going for less than 10 again was a shock, surely Bell being involved in a run out was even more shocking... useless fecking git. Loye is gunna top score here

Oh dear you will be glad you aren't watching this!

Bell and ******gwood stood in the middle of the pitch, they didn't know what to do! Meanwhile Cameron White throws down the stumps whilst lying on the floor.

So, who will replace Joyce? Bopara?

Potentially a turning point for England though, even with the impending abject defeat. Our world cup batting line up should surely pick itself now:

Strauss
Loye
Vaughan
Pieterson
******gwood
Flintoff

Means dropping Bell, but that's not much of a loss for me at all

Bell is a very good Test player, but his scoring rate is not good enough for a place in teh one day squad. Agree with the batting line up, bar any injuries etc, and as I type this Flintoff nearly holes out to deep square leg....

The thing that really has gotten me angry about this tour is that there is an obvious gap in quality between England and Australia, but it is not 5-0 in Tests, and (presumably) a clean sweep in limited overs games as well.

Not sure I agree with that entirely, certainly has improved since the shambles of an Ashes series he played in 2005, we won despite him. Filled his boots up nicely against Bangladesh, very good against Pakistan, but for me back to being not mentally strong enough against Australia this series. Made a good 50 when there was no pressure in one of the games we'd already lost, forget which it was. He can only play one way though, slow. Not the stuff of a number three batsman. No question his style isn't suitible for the one day game. Shall give him the benefit of the doubt in the test arena for now

I think he has a lot of potential - still only 24. Agree with him not being a number three, I'm with Boycott on this one, a number three should be an opener, which Bell plainly isn't.

Australia away is also very tough on any batsman, ******gwood (bar Adelaide) didn't fare too well either, but showed last winter that he is a very capable batsman on slower pitches. I wonder whether there could be any advantage to throwing caution to the wind for the World Cup squad, pick a young, aggressive team and focus on 2011 for the real challenge.

I say this just as Nixon departs for 9, leaving England 93-6. So what are we saying?150 all out?

Best case. Although has just come to my attention that Flintoff is yet to lose his wicket in this one day series yet! Time for him to have a hit I feel, no point trying to bat out the overs for me

The worst bit about this series has been the fact that England have always left the fans a small glimmer of hope. The last day at the Gabba, ditto in Adelaide, Cook's century in Perth, and now Flintoff at the crease here.

It just raises my blood pressure, thinking that we could do something special, like Headingley 1981.

Still, agree with you about Flintoff, may as well go for it now, he can hold his head high at the end of the tour IMO. Although the captaincy has done him no favours, he has given 110%

Vaughans injury means he gets another crack at opening the batting for England, if he can just put together a score or two in this final series against Australia, with the rate he scores he can make himself undroppable, even when / if Vaughan returns for the world cup.

He's not in

Why have they taken Bopara? It would be Loye, Owais Shah, then Bopara, surely... :wenger:

I just started a thread England WC squad thread in the Pavillion - his exclusion is confusing.
