It is true though, a fan posted the full interview in a depor forum:
MAKAAY: “I WILL LEAVE IN 2005”
24th April 2003 -- Roy Makaay has his mind set upon leaving Deportivo in 2005. He has been at the club since 1999 and is very satisfied about living and playing in La Coruña and two years ago wanted to extend his contract for the rest of his career. But he found deaf ears with Lendoiro who doesn’t wanted to improve his contract. Fact is that Makaay is one of the worst paid players at Deportivo.
Q: What will you do after 2005?
A: I won’t extend my contract at Deportivo and they already know about it. My representative, Rob Jansen, was here one month ago and this was the conclusion of that meeting. So I found it strange to hear Lendoiro speaking about finalizing negotiations.
Q: Are you completely convinced?
A: I have thought about it for a long time, and finally I made and told the decision.
Q: Could you tell us the reasons for it?
A: Two seasons ago I wanted to renew my contract. I had a good time at Deportivo and wanted to stay there. I could have signed a longer contract, but I wasn’t given the opportunity. At that time I wasn’t playing as well as nowadays and they didn’t offer me anything. Now I am in the highlights and I can tell that I don’t feel appreciated by the board. And that’s why I have decided to leave Deportivo in 2005.
Q: Don’t you feel appreciated by the board or by the deportivismo?
A: It’s a thing with the board. To the coach, my colleagues, the supporters and the city I only am thankful. That’s why I forget about all this when I enter the pitch and I always give everything I have. It’s the least I can do for them.
Q: You now have two seasons left. If Deportivo want to make a profit on you they will have to make a transfer now or next year.
A: To leave this summer? I only think about the final 8 matches and after it we’ll see. I always want to listen to every offer, from the club too, and the president knows it.
Q: It must have something to do with your salary.
A: I have been here for four years and they have never increased my salary. Let’s say I am not among the best paid players here, and I have to think of myself and my family. I must use this moment because I have been a professional player for 10 years and one never knows what can happen later.
Q: Where would you like to go to?
A: I always have said that only the Spanish and English competitions are attractive to me. I don’t say no now to the German and Italian ones, but some weeks ago I already said in Turin that Italian football isn’t among my favourites. Here I enjoy the game and my family likes to live in Spain. And that’s important too.
Q: You always have said that you’ll only leave Deportivo for a bigger club. As Madrid already have Ronaldo, would you go to Barcelona?
A: Barcelona is an option, but I would have to study an offer.
Q: Has Makaay done more for Deportivo than the other way round?
A: Deportivo presented me the opportunity to keep on playing in the Primera División when Tenerife got relegated. But I think that I have given much in return to the club.
Q: And after your career, would you like to become a coach?
A: I don’t see myself as a coach, but I like to work with children. Every summer I try to be present at youth tournaments in my country. The kids appreciate it and I enjoy it too.
