Macheda

Great, so we're gonna have a lazy horseface leading the line soon :(

:D

He looks to have huge potential. Of all the strikers that have come through or are coming through over the last few years, he seems to have the most attributes to make it. At the start of the season I was hoping he may make the squad for a Carling Cup game but this doesn't look like it's going to happen. He is only 17 but he'd need to make some kind of breakthrough for next season.

Keep forgetting how young he is.

Good to see some quality, tall young strikers at the club, in himself and Welbeck.

I'm guessing Welbeck is still injured, what odds Macheda to take his place in tomorrow's CC game?
0, Ferguson says Welbeck will play somewhere.

Macheda is still slightly into the Reserves and is some way off first-team action... For now.

How tall is Macheda exactly?

And how do Petrucci and Macheda compare as players?

All I know is that Petrucci has been used in midfield by us several times so far. Is there a case for saying we intend to use him as a midfielder rather than an off-striker in the future?

Petrucci is too fat - needs to lose weight and bulk up a bit at the same time.

Did those two (Welbeck and Macheda) ever look effective as a pairing in academy/reserves or have they not played too much together?

Petrucci fat? :D Too skinny if anything.

Welbeck and Macheda played together a fair few times in the first half of last season and looked pretty good as a partnership Red442.

Petrucci's natural position, the one he came to us from Roma with, is the Del Piero/Totti trequartista role, the number 10 playmaker role (not quite the second-striker role, but that's the closest role we have on the unruly British Isles).

He's been played mostly in midfield with a bit of license to go forward like Anderson.

I suspect he'll become a central midfielder in the future as he really hasn't had any striker roles at all.

Petrucci and Macheda seem to be our best hopes from the reserve team.

Neither have played much for the reserve team. Don´t think Petrucci has played at all for the reserves.

Personally I also rate Welbeck higher than both of them.

i'd say we have quite a few now. Cleverly has come on leaps and bounds, drinkwater impresses, chester looks good, eckersley looks like he could step up tomorrow most weeks

And there are many others. Macheda has a great chance but if we talk about his style or compare him to so and so it leads to unfair expectation.

Macheda and rossi would have been some partnership but wellbeck was very good - especially in the first half, against boro.

Thankfully Macheda is a good age so we don't have to rush anything

fergie talking about manucho going out on loan
“We’re confident in the progress of [Danny] Welbeck and the young boy [Federico] Macheda, who is doing exceptionally well in the youth team and Reserves. He’s a big lad now, he’s doing fantastically well. We also have the option of playing Ronaldo as a striker, too. So we’re well covered in that department.”

even getting a mention is huge ..

is he more of a target man or a support striker ?

Russel Beardsmore got a mention too, didn't mean he was destined for glory. Like what I hear though, would be fantastic if both he and Petrucci made it, along with Welbeck this sounds like the new fledlings. Still early days of course, but the academy looks sounder than I've seen it for years. Well, according to reports anyway.

Federico Macheda is certainly more of a main striker though his technique and passing/awareness means that is effective in the play as well as taking chances. He's more of a natural goalscorer compared to Welbeck in my opinion, his positional sense is brilliant and he is clinical in front of goal. Very good aerial ability as well as being able to get past players with a bit of skill and pace.

Great that he got a mention from Sir Alex, he certainly has the potential to make it at United but so many have in the past and yet not managed to hack it for our first team. Here's hoping if/when Macheda gets his chance, he takes it...for now though, he just has to keep up his good form when the Academy season resumes and the Reserve football finally gets going.

Is he fast? He have actually looked a bit "languid" when I have seen him play. Looks big, 6 2 maybe?

so he's a bit like adebayor?

Yeah perhaps, though he has a lot more hunger in closing the opposition down and generally to look for space in the box etc. A criticism that was levelled at Macheda last season was that he was too languid and maybe didn't work hard enough on the pitch (quite similar to what some feel about Berbatov) but this season he has seriously developed a determination and you can see him actively try to close down defenders and look for space. He's still got plenty to learn and lots of time to develop but the signs are good.

Always nice for a youngster from within the clubs youth ranks to get a mention.. Would really like to see him next season..

He's not played in either of this weeks reserve or academy games. Anyone know if he's injured? If Fergie has him in mind as an option then maybe he could be on the bench against Derby. Can't see him getting many other opportunities to blood him this season.

Edit: oops, didn't see that he played in that u18 game against Newcastle Town

He was on the sidelines against WBA so he will probably start v Stockport on Monday night for the reserves.

On 'Inside United' today they had a very good interview with Federico Macheda from yesterday. For those that have MUTV it's on at 8pm and 10pm again today and repeated throughout tomorrow I think, it's regularly a quality show. It's the first interview that he's done since he came and his first in English, he's seemed to pick up on the language very fast and spoke pretty well and they had a split screen showing Macheda doing skills on the other side hah.

As for the interview itself; he said he's adapted well to England, spoke of his career so far, very proud to be at "probably the best team in the world", has learnt a lot training with first team players and that his footballing idol is Marco Van Basten. He was also asked which of his goals so far for United have been his favourite and most memorable, his answer was the 3rd goal against Newcastle on Monday night as it was at St James' Park and completed his hattrick - as well as being a class goal.

Les Kershaw (Academy director) was the guest and spoke very highly of Kiko, and talked about watching Macheda play for Lazio when United began scouting him as well as talking of the likes of Rossi, Pique etc when they were all being scouted.

If anyone gets a video of this eventually please share?

Curious to see this lad in first team action

I did have a link to MUTV but flv seems to be down which is annoying.
