Too hip-hop, def. not as good as his pass work.
Atlantic definitely fecked this album up big time. Most of the beats and choruses are very mainstream and don't suit Lupe much at all. It's not his type of album and I expect his next album to be way better than this.
Thats my favorite track on the album. It's just one example though. All the other songs are very mainstream. Show goes on, Break the Chain and Out of my head just for example. His verses are fine, but the beats and choruses on most songs are meh.

It really isn't that bad Hectic. You made me laugh with all the hate in your hip hop thread. The production didn't suit him, but his talent is there for sure. Words I never said is a 10/10.
I like that though, it's like he commercialised himself with dignity. Unlike Drake who's just turned to shit now, you can still very much see Lupe's brilliance in his verses.
He's no Immortal Technique, but his themes are still there.

I've listened to it a few times since the leak and reckon it's very good, but not great. It's pretty obvious that his record company had full control of this album, he had no choice otherwise it wouldn't exist right now.
It's nowhere near F&L, The Cool or his Fahrenheit mixtape series. I prefer the soulful feel of F&L and versatility on The Cool. This one like you said, had a mainstream appeal to it, the tracks sounds similar to ones off B.O.B's album - well, they are are the same record label after all.
He'll no doubt receive a lot of criticism for the drastic change in style (like Common did when he released Electric Circus) hopefully the label will let him do his own thing on the next album.

I did slap my dad, all upside his head and shit......He was bewildered and looked really frightened as my eyes glazed over and I endlessly pummeled into him screaming 'LUPE' over and over again.
The fall in quality from FL and the Cool is staggering, some of the tracks are cringeworthy and I'm not even a hardcore hiphop fan.
All Black Everything is one of the more Lupe-y tracks on the album, if that is possible.
Hooks and choruses don't make an album bad, the lyrical flair is still there, but ironically, there has definately been a dumbening down in his lyrics
