Peterborough United's young goalkeeper Luke Steele, on-loan to Premiership giants Manchester United, turned in an outstanding performance on his reserve team debut against Oldham Athletic on Monday evening, in the Manchester Senior Cup.

The young goalkeeper kept a clean sheet in an under 17 fixture at the weekend and Posh boss Barry Fry was delighted to hear of Steele's performance in the reserve side.

'One of the United scouts gave me a call and told me that Luke was outstanding in a 2-1 defeat against Oldham. Luke played in a very young United side and made some good saves against an experienced Oldham outfit,' said Fry.

The Reds took the lead in the 28th minute at Boundary Park through a Daniel Nardiello penalty, but two second half goals from Craig Dudley condemned Brian McClair's men to defeat.

Next weekend 17-year-old Steele joins the England Under 18 squad to prepare for a friendly against Italy at Bellaria, near Rimini on Wednesday week, March 20th. Steele is the only player from a Nationwide League club in a squad drawn from a dozen Premier sides and including five of his current colleagues at Manchester United.
