Is he any good?

Sir Alex Ferguson is said to have been urged to sign Lille full-back Lucas Digne in the summer by his brother and chief Manchester United scout Martin Ferguson.

United have turned to Digne as the club step up their hunt for a long-term successor to Patrice Evra, whose United career is coming to an end.

Everton wing-back Leighton Baines and Lyon star Samuel Umtiti are both options that have been considered by United, but it’s thought that Chief European scout Martin Ferguson has recommended Lille teenage Digne as a cut-price alternative.

Ferguson was spotted watching the 19-year-old during a France Under-21 fixture towards the end of last year, and has reportedly made checks into the player’s background as United enrich their scouting report on the youngster.

Inter Milan and Arsenal are among other sides to have looked at the Lille star, but United are his preferred destination.

Digne has already been told he will sold to free up cash by Lille in the summer, and it is thought that bids in the region of £7million would be enough to do business.

He is currently contracted to the Ligue 1 side until 2017 – having only signed a new deal in December.

So he signed a new deal in December - he's been told he will be making way to free up some cash. The figure of 7m floating around. Us, Arsenal and Inter interested.

I don't know.. pretty much all that information clashes with each other.

He looks like a full back if that helps. Seen him a few times when he was younger, he seems to be around for ages already. Havent seen much of him recently mind.

When he was younger Decs? Hes only 19
From what Ive seen of him hes very mobile and is pretty good going foward, still a bit rash in the tackle due to his age and his position isnt the worst for his age neither.

I personally really like the chap and I hope he is gonna be Paddy's successor.

He's been linked with us for a while constantly.

But this seems bit of a nothing article tbh. They have thrown in Umtiti after his goal last night.

It was mentioned in French Football today that we scouted him.

He's really good in the Ligue 1, one of the best LBs this season and at his age which makes it even more impressive.Typical modern day full backs who loves to attack, he's a good cross and a powerful shot

Was very impressed when I saw him last season. Was hoping we were looking at him when we scouted Hazard. Looks to be the genuine article of quality fullback.

I simply meant that he must have made his debut at 16 or something. After a quick wiki, Im wrong !!! Think im just aware of him from watching various youth tournaments in the last 4/5 years

Looks like a physical raw full back who likes to bomb forward just like Buttner, would be an interesting battle between the two.

From what I saw of him last season I'd back him over Buttner certainly, who I've been dissappointed in apart from his one great, first, match. Plus he's also 4 years younger and a much better bet long term but I'm sure the French posters will tell you that better than I can

I already had this conversation with another poster, disappointed how exactly? when has he been given a chance over Evra?

He's had a couple of games. He sometimes gives the ball away trying to dribble in his own half and generally doesn't have much of an impact going forward, his crossing has been especially dissappointing. And he clearly has some work to do on his defending.

At least he's competing for Evra's spot and I believe thats one reason Evra has been playing better. But longterm? He's 24. Not sure I see it

Have people forgotten Fabio or is he no longer rated on here? I for one hope he will be back in the first-team next season covering for both Evra and his brother. He could also maybe potentially possibly become a bit of a Park-type player with his engine, springy-ness and industry. Not sure.

Fabio is a weird one. At one point 2 years ago he overtook his brother as first choice right back, then Rafael seemed to accelerate in development. I'm not even sure how to rate Fabio right now, other than promising, but then he's been "promising" for about 4 years now.

I think Fabio will make it and come back into the fold for next season. However I'm not sure we're convinced he'll be playing left back fulltime. As in his time here he's had so many oppertunities to play there and he's often been picked on the right instead.

I'm least sure of Buttner and anything could happen with Evra.

We've probably scouted him.. but we do that with dozens of footballers.

If you believe the papers, we'd be signing 10+ players every transfer window..

Now they've just started adding Martin Ferguson's name to give the story more credibility.

I'd say he's done better for us than just show promise. He's also never really had an extended run in the team. Cleverley didn't really set the world alight at Wigan, but when he came back into the class that is our team, he shone. I'm hoping the same will apply to Fabio.

Of course, he is right-footed, but so was Irwin. Neither of them is really like a wing-broken bird going in Beckham-circles to find an option.

I just think in Fabio we've got someone who can cover and provide competition to Rafael and Evra, with Buttner on our books we've got 4 full-backs. I'd only want another full-back if Evra were to leave for some reason in the summer (which I hope he doesn't).

I think it should be pretty clear Butter isn't/wasn't intended to be Evra's successor. He's just here to be available while Fabio is on loan. Though Evra has definitely improved this season he still shouldn't have very many season left. Fabio had shown promise and may be the answer but I'd still prefer and actual left footed player to be our left back, especially since we don't have a left footed winger any more.

I'd prefer a left-footed winger to a left-footed full-back tbh. We could do with one of those.

Buttner has barely impressed even in the U21's tbh. Probably needs a PL loan if he can get one next year.

Fabio will come back and be backup for both RB and LB, if he is willing to be patient. Could be a good competition between him and Digne if we buy him.

Couple of games isnt enough

Couple of games isnt enough

Maybe for us, but it definitely is for Sir Alex. He gets to watch players in training too. If we do sign another left back as we continued to be linked with it'll tell you all you need to know
